Wow! Whoever edited the book or commissioned this clearly needs to look more carefully at what is produced.

I can only imagine that with the folklore surrounding the old west in the US, that in his mind cowboys are heroic.

David Harding @groupharding.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Same in British English, a cowboy is often regarded as someone whose careless or reckless. It's a very odd thing to say.

For me, yes. Talking to my younger colleagues I think so for them as well. Thailand is better known today and it's understood we are not a third world country. But it means I am always most careful in what I say in any review. I don't want anyone to have to experience what I did.

This was almost 20 years ago, when it seems that was considered "Fine actually".

I did say in the rebuttal that I was a Native speaker and I heard no more about it. In my early years in Thailand this happend a few times. In a journal I will not name, I got a reviewer who said the work was from Thailand and therefore no good and it was rejected. I was not pleased.

I also was once told that my paper should be thoroughly edited by a native speaker. I suspect that the Thai address on the paper confused them!

I listen to this album regularly and could do so forever. It's just a masterpiece.

Not my feild but I have heard good things about "Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition" by Warren and Wyatt.

This is critical. A major reason Thai academics increasingly publish in for-profit journals is because their funding requires it. The OA journals have higher quartiles and hence we are forced to publish there, even though we know the journal isn't necessarily as good.

Not published yet, even I am not yet certain exactly what the structure will be.

Actually we do need this. I don't know about you but I feel that synthetic chemistry (organic or inorganic) is not as well represented as it used to be. Certainly, we are having to spend more time with our grad students teaching them things I feel they should be able to do already.

Avoiding the path of LIESST resistance
Nature Chemistry, Published online: 25 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41557-026-02259-7Access to long-lived light-induced states in earth-abundant transition-metal chromophores is desirable but hard to achieve. Now, enhanced metal–ligand covalency has been shown to increase the lifetime of the photomagnetic high-spin state in a manganese photoswitch.

I think the answer has to be yes in most cases. The tricky issue comes in defining what is a bond? So organic materials and ionic materials I'd say yes. Metals🤔

Just walked past this collection of bags outside one of the lecture rooms. In the UK, this would all be stolen in minutes!

I remember walking through the jungle here in Thailand and accidentally put my foot through the outer edge of a red ants nest. To say the ants were not impressed is the understatement of the centuary! I didn't enjoy it either!

For the first time in a while I did some real chemistry in the lab, growing crystals. The results are pretty decent I'd say.

Why do they feel the need to belittle anyone who has a different experience to them? Also what data or evidence are they using to support this view?

Why is it that we are so quick to turn everything into innuendo? Sometimes I despair of the world.

I am the same. There are many chemicals I just don't feel comfortable with my student's using. Cyanide is one of them, we just don't touch them.

It concerns how quickly so many of the tech companies are to please him. But perhaps they also need him to prop up other projects they have going? I personally think AI is nowhere near as useful as we are told it is.

The Gulf of Mexico does have G of America in parentheses. But we’ve just ignored it in the country. Certainly, all schools and universities use GoM.

Speed over originality has been the main outcome from AI in such uses.

Absolutely. I have already warned my students of this. It removes your identity and individuality. It's not a good use of the tool.

This is where we need to ask what matters to us. If the metrics are in areas that are not of critical importance to you, or are things you have no control over (income from block grants), then it's best to not concern ourselves too much with these. Universities are always more than their rank.

The problem with this approach is that it shortens the government horizon and that in turn impacts the discovery of truly ground-breaking ideas. Given AI's potential to find some of these small gains, it strikes me as sensible for research agencies to pursue these longer term goals.

Living in Thailand, I can say that humidity matters a great deal for baking soda. The higher the humidity, the quicker it goes off, as I know to my cost. There's nothing worse than a cake that doesn't rise!

I try to create an atmosphere where the students work with me on the paper. I often find I learn as much from them as they do from me. Certainly in a recent paper, in disucssing how we might best showcase the work, we ended up adding a section to the paper I hadn't previously considered.

You could hugely increase the budget provided by the government, but that would not solve the manpower issue. As you say, voters need to better understand how universities work and the benefits they provide. It's sad that we even need to say this.

I was teaching d-block chemistry a few weeks ago and thought exactly this. It's so sad that Group 7 only has 2 elements we can really play with.
