In many countries, #groupBstrep guidelines recommend getting tested for GBS during your 36th or 37th week of pregnancy! If the test result is positive, you should receive IV antibiotics during labor. Knowing your GBS status is important! gbs-intl.org/gbs-testing

Recovering from a #groupBstrep infection does not mean that a baby cannot become infected by GBS again. Recurrent group B strep disease can occur after completed appropriate treatment of the primary infection. Parents need to be made aware! gbs-info.org

Group B strep (GBS) testing is typically done late in pregnancy, but some parents may never receive or fully understand their results. Knowing your GBS status matters because it helps you and your healthcare team make a plan for labor and delivery to help protect your baby.

Studies show that giving intrapartum IV antibiotics during labor interrupts vertical transmission of #groupBstrep and significantly decreases the incidence of early-onset GBS disease! Make sure you know your GBS status!

Research is key. Major progress has been made toward having a maternal #GroupBStrep vaccine widely available to help protect babies from GBS. Until then, testing and appropriate treatment are our best tools! gbs-intl.org/gbs-testing

The GBS swab test is a quick and simple test to identify if you need treatment to help protect your baby during birth! Ideally done during the 36th or 37th week, the swab is inserted in both the vagina and rectum and cultured for GBS. Knowing your GBS status is so important!

In many countries, it is recommended that women are tested for GBS during the 36th or 37th week of pregnancy. This timeframe is highly predictive of GBS status for most births. If you test negative, ask about being tested again if you have not given birth within five weeks of your test being done.

Prenatal-onset and early-onset GBS disease are typically spread through vertical transmission, from mother to baby. However, late-onset GBS disease can be caused by sources other than the mother, also known as horizontal transmission. Visit gbs-intl.org/how-gbs for more info!

GBS guidelines vary by country, with some countries having none. Without testing for maternal colonization during pregnancy, countless babies are left at risk! While rates vary by region, about 1 in 5 pregnant people are colonized with GBS worldwide.

This is a common question we hear from parents whose baby was infected by #groupBstrep even though the mother's GBS status was negative. While it varies by case and the exact way is usually difficult to determine, there are a few possible explanations: gbs-intl.org/testing-negative

Testing Negative
All women need to know how to help protect their babies from group B strep even if they have tested negative. A woman's GBS status can change, so even if she has tested negative, she could later be colonized.

While there can be symptoms of group B strep colonization, most people do not experience any! That’s why GBS testing during pregnancy is so important! If you test positive, you should receive IV antibiotics during labor to help protect your baby from early-onset GBS disease.
