I've driven European cars with gauges that go from 0 to 1 where 0 is empty but 1 corresponds to ~half full. My Triumph motorcycle is similar: After a fill-up the gauge is just above 1; it hits 1 when there's half a tank left. There's a red zone at the bottom for 1/2 gallon left — and it's accurate!

The "dial effect" is well known in racing. On racing motorcycles (and, I presume, cars) the tachometer is generally set up to have redline at the 12 o'clock position, so you can tell at a glance where you are with respect to revs.
