A fun bit of trivia about today's physics Nobel Prize: Francis Halzen won it for envisioning and leading the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, but apparently he's never actually been there! WFH FTW. (To be fair, it is rather... remote.)

I did of course also do some holidaying and had an amazing time seeing a lot of the obvious sights as well as wandering through some beautiful hutong districts, meeting lovely people, eating delicious food, and even caught a jazz gig!

Just back from work trip to Beijing. Taught a workshop to a global selection of museum professionals, gave a paper at the world conference for science literacy, and presented a paper to colleagues at the China Science and Technology Museum, then a 2hr TV recording with some science fiction writers!
Me standing in front of a Science Museum branded slide with the title "Living in the Future: Communicating Technologies of Tomorrow in the UK's Science Museum Group". An audience watches patiently.Screenshot from a Chinese social media app showing a clip from Chinese news station CCTV1, it is announcing the opening of the world conference on science literacy and shows me sitting in the front row alongside other more important dignitaries and representatives.Photo after recording a programme for Chinese TV discussing science fiction as a tool for thinking about the future of museums. The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Truly spectacular photo by Jean Marquis of workers clambering on scaffolding inside the parabolic mirror structure of the solar furnace in Mont-Louis in southern France in 1958. The solar furnace in the Pyrenees, built in 1949, was the first facility of its kind in the world 🗃️

Really fortunate to have been invited to a private view of the Bayeux Tapestry this morning. Pictures cannot do it credit, it's an astonishing object displayed beautifully. Feeling very lucky!

Agreed, I've said the same thing elsewhere. It's a horrendous symptom of AI that it causes us to have to question every remarkable thing we might encounter, like it's sucked a little bit of joy out of everything.

I think its real, the shots are longer than most AI gen stuff, and the continuity is good. And little details like the fish which jumps to try to get away and the dolphin changing course to chase it, I choose to believe that's real and there is beauty and wonder in this world still.

Being based just over the road, I often go into Imperial to get some lunch or just for a change of scenery. I am always both hypnotised, amused and horrified by this concept art on the hoarding around some renovation work they're doing.

#TodayInQueerHistory August 30 (1984) Octavia Butler is a revered voice in sci-fi. #OTD she won her first Hugo award, for Speech Sounds, which brought her greater prominence. Butler's work often explored queer themes. She described herself as a "hermit", closely guarding her private life.

My favourite is Always Coming Home which is like an anthropological survey of a fictional people in a post apocalyptic future. Given her parents that is of course fascinating. It is NOT everyone's cup of tea though: tapestry of materials, no real plot just a world that wraps around you.

I can see that I have been too slow and the conventional and correct wisdom that The Dispossessed is the right answer has been roundly delivered. See also Earthsea (esp books 2&3) and Omelas. I won't contradict that but I will say for a different approach check out Lathe of Heaven
