LOL ouch #ttrpg
a hyper-specific experience in mind. This is pretty bog-standard OSR-adjacent platitude stuff. Play to see what happens, prepare the world and not a plot, all those things that you read in Principia Apocrypha or whatever goofy onboarding text some Gen Xer with too much time on his hands and no gaming group wrote up to explain his gaming subgenre to others of his class.

Fanatical recently had a bundle for the old Dark Conspiracy RPG and boy do I have some thoughts. It wasn't bad, maybe I'll write up a review.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is an insanely good show with vibes that are off the chart.

Orden is not explicitly a high fantasy world, even though there are some pretty high fantasy things going on in it, because the average person has very little access to magic. The typical village might have a priest who knows some real prayers that close wounds or cure minor ailments, or an alchemist or hedge wizard who can brew some potions or conjure minor spells, but that's the extent of it. The result is, though Orden is a pre-industrial world with technology and societies akin to 13th-century Europe, the quality of life of the people who live there is a lot closer to ours. They live about as long as we do, die from disease about as often as we do, and generally have diets similar to ours, though with vastly more basic and constricted options on their menus.

Spanish horror is on a high and The Wailing (2024) is an excellent example of it. Very like It Follows, but with its own unique approach.

If you're headed to #UKGE2025 you can buy copies of CONT/EXT from the nice people at @uktin.bsky.social. They're at table 383 in the NEC Hall 2.

Just finished Octavia Butler's post- (mid?) apocalyptic classic, Parable of the Sower. You can see how it influenced things like The Road and 28 Days Later. Lots about environmental catastrophe and authoritarian capitalism, relevant to our present.

From S01E03, Jodi was a bit-character who shows up with a list of complaints. She earns House’s respect by admitting she’s just getting the most out of her insurance before she’s fired. “I just don't like being told what to do.” Same, Jodi, same.

Sometimes I think about things. For example, gritty, shared-universe reboots they'll never make.
Screenshot of note reading:

Cabot Cove

Gritty reboot of Murder, She Wrote, called Cabot Cove. Set after Jessica’s death. Featuring her estranged daughter, Annika, solving serious crimes, and a sinister figure who might be Jessica’s Moriarty.

Guest stars include:

- Betty White as Columbo’s irascible widow.
- Robert Wagner reprising his role as Jonathan Hart from Hart to Hart, now an embittered divorcee.
- The Equalizer as a UKIP-voting boomer.
- Richard Dean Anderson reprising his role as a balding, shades-wearing MAGA MacGyver.

Isle of the Mighty is an example of that tricky genre: UK setting books. Somehow they always get the tone wrong. AFAICT none of the authors were British, which leads to this Quaint Britain vibe. It's written for a US market, I guess.

I still struggle to understand Immortal: The Invisible War. I think it was an attempt to do for gods, what Masquerade did for vampires. But with psychedelic art and something about vocal cords. Possibly the gayest book I own. I love it.
