Those Starved

I saw their teeth all bite the air,
And one who led so many there,
Both Ubalin and Boniface,
Who once with crook the Church embraced.
I saw Marchese, who once had ease
In food and drink - yet can't appease -
His appetites now look full dry,
For nothing now will satisfy.
Just as one looks and then esteems
One more than most, so one I see;
My friend of Luca that I know,
That he know me he seemed to show.
He muttered then most guttural -
I heard from wound most pitiful,
Where Justice did him so denude,
Who stares at me as if he knew.

Stripped of Good

Just as the birds on winter Nile
Will slow in air as flock compile,
Then speed their flight to form a file -
Then with horizon reconcile;
So all the souls then move away
With faces pale resume the race,
Their backs to us as off they speed -
With want and hope they quickly leave,
And just as one who needs to wheeze,
So Forese stopped as off they weave.

He let the running flock pass by -
And let himself then fall behind;
'When will we see,' he sadly asked;
'Each other in the Heaven's bask?'

'I do not know how long I'll live,'
Is answer that I spirit give;
'However quick is my return -
But for these shores my heart now yearns.
For place I'm set to live by day
Was stripped of good along the way,
And seems on road to place most low!'
I told him then, most fervent, slow.
'Do not be vexed,' he said to me;
'For I can see the fate of these;
These guilty will be dragged by tails
Of beast to where purgation fails.
At every step the beast moves fast -
Till gaining speed he catch at last
And smashes them into a pulp,
Then squalid leaves the bones undone.'

The Mad Course (of Ulysses)

At this my lady, still beside -
She told me then: 'How high you've climbed,
See how far you you've climbed on high -
Towards the Maker in the sky.
From valley dark to highest heights,
You've climbed beyond all paradigms.
Now look around so you can see -
The shape of raw reality -
That falls away beneath your feet,
Where all that matter least accrete!
Now as you look - see sights profound -
And note how far you've traveled now!'

So I looked down and saw Cadiz -
I saw the mad course of Ulysses,
And I saw Crete there in the East,
Where Zeus first took his captive sweet.

I should have seen more of the floor
Where threshed was flesh and blood was poured -
But for the motion of the Sun,
Which underneath my feet had spun -
As if it tried to sneak a peek
Of knickers I do private keep.

Just as an arrow drawn with might -
The bow will snap if pulled too tight,
And meet its mark with feeble force -
This heavy weight I can't support.
I burst and let the tears pour forth
That leaves me gasping, sad and hoarse!

Says she; 'As you desired me -
This helped thee keep thy purity
Upon the road to Heaven's peak,
But road was long and you were weak!
When chain or ditch did block the way -
Made you so keen to go astray?
What allurement and what benefit
On other brows so evident
That make you take a fake parade
In front of righteous promenade?'
