The information panel behind the terminal says: “In 1979, MDC introduced a news and business research service called NEXIS, which was packaged free with the LEXIS service. By 1983, the LEXIS database had 12.5 million pages of legal text, while NEXIS provided access to 160 major newspapers, magazines and wire services. That same year, a license agreement was signed with the New York Times giving MDC exclusive rights to the newspaper's electronic archives.
“Additionally, LEXIS was being used by nearly every large law firm, law school, court and government agency.
“In December 1988, MDC completed the purchase of the Michie Company for $226.5 million. The acquisition of Michie, which published the laws of 22 states, helped build the LEXIS database to a complete set of 50 state statutes and turned MDC into a true legal publisher.
“In May 1994, Mead Corporation announced that it was exiting the electronic information market, and it put MDC on the market. That year, Reed Elsevier, a publisher of more than 1,000 scientific journals, purchased Mead Data Central for $1.5 billion. The company would remain in Ohio and operate under the name LexisNexis. Continuing its excellence through innovation, in 1997, LexisNexis launched the first web-based legal research service, lexis.com and had over 1 billion documents online.
