Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 05/03/2025So what's the recommendation? Raise taxes, or keep defence spending at an absurdly low level even though Putin and our adversaries are splurging like its out of fashion? 300
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 05/03/2025Well I sort of take your point but your fact is wrong. The first Spitfire flew in March 1936, while the Battle of Cable Street wasn't until October. But the Spit didn't enter service with the RAF until August 1938.. 000
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 05/03/2025But the real Mosley never was in charge. And when the chips were down in 1940, he was promptly detained under Defence Regulation 18B. But if in 1934, everyone had said, "Oh no let's not build Spitfires, or Cromwell tanks, because... Mosley," well maybe he would never have been detained.. 000
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 05/03/2025If I was a Pole or a Lithuanian, where they are spending tons more proportionately than us or the French & Germans, and have even curbed welfare spending to do so, I would greet that concern with a massive eye-roll given where we are, I'm afraid. 110
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 05/03/2025True. But last time I looked, Putin was spending close to 10% of Russia's GDP on armaments. And there's hardly much sign of the military industrial complex doing its malign schtick in W Europe atm tbh 110

Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 25/02/2025How tin-eared is Starmer? This is, after all, the PM who's been - along with his ministers - sounding the alarm about war risk and rearmament. To use as your baseline for this feeble increase a period when Britain disarmed, leaving its forces denuded, is just unserious, even contemptible. 111
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 16/02/2025You are mistaking a rhetorical piece of rabble-rousing for an actual genuine enquiry. No biggie; easily done.. 010

Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 31/01/2025These are territorial emissions, which are tbh fairly meaningless in the context of a global issue. Consumption emissions (the carbon attached to everything we consume, wherever produced) present a different picture, having fallen by just over 20% since 1990. 000
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 29/01/2025If it contains nuclear waste his life may not be that long 010
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 27/01/2025The only way round this, it seems to me, is to close the arbitrage for the big industrial and tech users that want to do PPAs, and get this nice fillip from shedding grid costs. That means paying an insurance fee for access to grid backup. 000
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 27/01/2025But if they are only paying for the time they are on the grid, it doesn't get round the problem for everyone else. And remember: with the cost of hooking up more dispersed renewables onto the grid, the cost of the network isn't shrinking; its going up 100
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 27/01/2025Great for them: they no longer pay the grid charges. But the cost of the grid itself doesn't go down. It's just mutualised across a smaller rate base. And, don't forget, the big user might sometimes still want access to the grid, say when their private power plant goes down for maintenance.. 110
Jonathan Ford @grepsul.bsky.social · 27/01/2025It matters because the current business model for most grids is based on a usage charge - so that grid costs are just a chunk of the overall bill a customer pays for power. Power Purchase Agreements get round that by allowing industrial purchasers to "go behind the meter" 100
