Well, that seems unlikely, as the Labour Party has a record of avoiding appointing women to the leadership role. No doubt there are a number of white men just out of sight who’ll be available and selectable in 15 months time.

A resonance from WW2 in the background, halfway through the video. Field Marshal Viscount Slim’s back is turned as he trains his binoculars on Whitehall. The war’s most effective military commander, but almost unknown, while braggart Montgomery’s image survives. The Slims don’t make it in politics.

Andy Platitude’s policy agenda: 1. The devil isn’t in the detail. They’re one and the same thing. 2. People understand -isms. Andyism is my core policy. 3. Reform has persuaded people to fear foreigners. I can persuade people to fear southerners. 4. Make Work work, and the workers will work.

I’ve just seen Burnham’s victory speech. He certainly isn’t basing his appeal on communication skills. Fairly cringeworthy stuff which suggests he would be shown up by all of Farage, Davey, and Badenoch.

There seems to be a good case for using driverless haulage vehicles once the technology is reliable. It’s likely to be safer. The lorries could travel slower but without rest breaks. They could be restricted to the inside lanes.

Graham Elliott @grenadilladaddy.bsky.social · 16/06/2026
I had to avoid the M25 today because two lorries had collided and caused a fire (no injuries or fatalities reported). This has closed one carriageway the whole day and resurfacing works are needed through the night. Imagine the furore if this had involved a driverless vehicle.

The Wyrds Of Esla By Graham Paul Elliott
I wrote this in the mid 1980s, and only minor stylistic amendments have been made since. This is a purely fictional account of events set in the early stages of Anglo-Saxon England, which suggests a way in which the Germanic immigrants...

I was a bit shocked by this programme, because I can’t understand how anyone could follow his beat, and it is obvious that the Hallé couldn’t (in the Bruckner). He also has nothing to say about the skill of conducting apart from “you’ve either got it or you haven’t”.

What is referred to as ‘tactical voting’ is the new normal. We vote against the party we like the least, and scarcely consider which party we like the most. That’s partly because we don’t like any of them anymore, and partly because the question, framed that way, has become redundant.

The publisher of this piece refuses to sell the parts, and will only rent it for over £100 for just one month, and demands to be given the address where it will be played. Disgraceful conduct. Music publishers too often focus on profit and not on art.

Lots of good points in this power test of a Citroen GSA. My first car was a Citroen GS 1222cc, and I seem to recall that the book power was 58hp. The GSA was a later model. It would be good to see whether a GS would do well in this test @upndown.bsky.social

Several hours of delays on a railway line because a lorry collided with a level crossing gate. What does that say about the safety of such a lorry driver on the road in general? I have driven for nearly 50 years and have never hit a gate, barrier, or bridge.
