Murray, mate, you're not even constructive with your own portfolio, get your hand off it. If you want to make resource companies pay their damn tax, or wean them off taxpayer subsidies, or get some support to stop new gas projects, the Greens are more than willing to build that bridge with you.

I appear to have tripped and accidentally built a gunpla. These things are basically cool robot Lego sets that sell for 60% or less than a Lego set of equivalent complexity.

We all accept that some level of road fatalities is an acceptable price to pay for the convenience of road transport but we never seem to discuss how many 9/11s are a reasonable price for the convenience of not doing airport security bullshit. 🤷❓

There are so many great ones this year alone but I'm in the mood to re-recommend Autumn de Wilde's 2020 version of "Emma", which is one of the most visually breathtaking films I've seen. Just an absolute treat for the eyes in every shot.

Book #27 for 2026 is Carl's Doomsday Scenario (2021-Matt Dinniman). Entertaining enough, but not nearly as good as the first one, and saddled with an upsettingly extended dead sex worker plotline that someone should have had a word with the author about.

Man, Amziah King - a movie I almost bailed on - just keeps growing on me, particularly as I listen back over the soundtrack. It feels immense. And for all that critics panned the back half, it's that moment near the end where she's looking at Jane through a window that makes the whole film.

My nine games, in terms of things that influenced my taste. Number 10 would be Doom or Doom 2, which I spent many hours building levels for back in the day, and number 11 is probably the original Monkey Island or Quest for Glory.
Panel of nine games: Ultima I, Phantasy Star, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy VII, Braid, Telltale's The Walking Dead, Dragon Age Origins, and Sid Meier's Civilization.

Imperfect women (and particularly intersectional women) are policed and used as examples with a passion we rarely reserve for imperfect men holding similar levels of influence.

Very sad to be reaching that intersection of ageing and the economy where I cannot afford the big new games and nor do I have time to play them. (Although being still caught up in a forever-game like Genshin Impact is also a factor.)

Just on this: either the person operating an AI is the author of what it does, or they're not, but I feel like we can't have it both ways here. (I say we hold the operator responsible for the reasonably foreseeable crimes of the tool, and at this stage autonomous hacks should be foreseeable.)

Film #143 for 2026 is The Rivals of Amziah King (2026). A thing happens near the start that is so shocking, pointless and upsetting that viewers might reasonably feel the filmmaker has broken trust, and switch off. Which is a shame, because everything afterwards is profoundly magical.

Film #142 for 2026 is They Will Kill You (2026). It's stylish action, in horror costuming - basically John Wick with assassins switched out for Satanists. The action is inventive, enjoyable and well-shot, which is good, because (as with John Wick) the action's all it has to offer. I liked it.

Batman would, of course, immediately take the correct solution to the trolley problem, which is to prioritise finding and disabling the person and/or system that created it. (Well, he's not quite as good at the "system" bit, but the point remains.)

If you can't project competence for a job while holding an iced coffee then you probably aren't qualified for that job, and if a job won't let you bring an iced coffee to an interview then you weren't going to be happy working it.

Watching "They Will Kill You" (2026), which ably answers the question absolutely nobody asked of, "What if Quentin Tarantino had directed Get Out?" There is stylish action. There is a 70s exploitation vibe. There are weird line deliveries. There are ferocious women. There are feet.

FYI the trailer and all the marketing wildly misrepresents The Rivals of Amziah King in ways that could be traumatic. It's not a horror film, per se, but go into it like it is.

Film #141 for 2026 is Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026). Radio Silence is so good at this. It's honestly better than the first one. Samara Weaving gets joined by a stacked cast, with Kathryn Newton playing her sister as a very welcome highlight. It's a delight when horror is this fun.

Genshin Impact is rapidly approaching its big finale and I'm still stuck mopping up the last Natlan content, two entire expansions behind where the story is. It's still a damn pretty game though.

FFS, people, criticize Sydney Sweeney for supporting sports betting, or criticize the sports betting company for funding a sexualised ad campaign. But Sweeney, personally, is allowed to sexualise whatever she likes if she's doing it with her own body, and that's no one's business but hers.

Videogame #37 for 2026 is 1942 (1985-NES). Yes, that's a confusing series of years. The classic shooting action is still vital - if insanely protracted and repetitive, for those intent on finishing it - but wow, that is some of the worst and most irritating sound ever produced by a home console.

Videogame #36 for 2026 is 3-D World Runner (1987-NES), an endless runner with some light rail shooter elements. It's brightly coloured, and different to other games of its time, but the gameplay is repetitive, shallow, and not always entirely fair.

Film #140 for 2026 is A Bug's Life (1998). Pixar does Seven Samurai, with bugs, but sadly their ambition exceeds their puny 1998 technology (and their scriptwriting skills). The weird four-limbed ants in particular look awful (and why are they blue or pink based on gender instead of ant-coloured?)

Film #139 for 2026 is 28 Days Later (2002), a re-watch. The decision to film in 720p digital video has not aged well, but in every other respect it remains a masterpiece - certainly the second-most-influential zombie film in cinema history. I'd forgotten quite how soaked in grief it is.

Film #138 for 2026 is The Invite (2026). It's far better-made than Olivia Wilde's last film, and Edward Norton (as always) delivers a casually masterful performance, and a lot of the film really works - but Seth Rogen flies too far over the asshole horizon for it to earn the themes it tries for.
Olivia Wilde offers what is probably actually prosciutto in "The Invite" (2026).

"50s tradwife, the house is on fire!" "No, darling, that's just the aurora borealis." (Ron Francis, Home Fires, 2017)
Home Fires, oil on canvas, 2017, by Ron Francis. A 50-style tradwife stands in front of the door to her house, watching an elderly couple walk up the footpath towards here. Her pose in front of the door is equivocal - possibly welcoming, possibly guarding. Unnatural bright-red flame-like colours can be seen inside the house through a small crack in the door.

Videogame #35 for 2026 is Time Gal (1992-Sega CD). It's an FMV quick-time game in the style of Dragon's Lair, mostly held down by the shallowness of that gameplay style and the fact that video on the Sega CD looks like pixelated garbage. Still, it's lively and short.

Just a reminder that conservative governments love sending cheques to voters instead of e.g. lowering low-income taxes or reducing health costs, because people overwhelmingly *spend* those cheques on luxury items. It's a transfer of taxpayer wealth to business, who are the beneficiaries.

Videogame #34 for 2026 is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992-Master System). With no Tails and no spin dash, it's more an expansion of the first Master System Sonic than a port of the "real" Sonic 2 - but for what it is, it's damn good. More memorable levels, better music, and better bosses. A gem.

Videogame #33 for 2026 is Dragon Crystal (1990-Master System). It's a roguelike - in the sense of literally a shallower, simpler Rogue - and I liked it very much as a child. Emulating it today shows how unfairly stacked the odds are past about level 12, and how disappointing the actual end is.

Videogame #32 for 2026 is Sonic the Hedgehog (1991-Master System). The Master System version of Sonic 1 has fewer and shorter levels and noticeably less speed, but it's otherwise an impressive achievement in offering something comparable to the Megadrive on much less powerful hardware.

Book #24 for 2026 is "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" by Stephen Graham Jones. There's plenty of craft in this anti-colonialist riff on vampire myths (I enjoyed it), but it struggles to know whose story it's telling, or where the ending is. The modern-day framing story is certainly a mistake.
