Beyond the actual base size probably being way larger than it should be, my guess is a caching bug. I've hit bugs in Chrome where the cache refuses to clear even with manual commands to do so. A lot of PDFs have massive image files in them, so that could add up real quick in a bugged out cache.

Wait LLVM is infected with LLM generated code now? That is very very disturbingly bad.

When first looking at that image, I thought the ball was a pizza. Now I want to play a soccer video game where pizzas get thrown on the field, and the players will banana-peel-slip on them.

Apple's internal politics demand the safer, more private, low-tax web always remain inferior to the proprietary native apps it profits from through enclosure. This sometimes escapes the lips of Fruit Co. employees as "native and web solve different problems." Pure, uncut horseshit.

Seeing "ai" twice really close together next to your circular avatar makes me think of AiAi from Monkey Ball. Little My even has a hair bit sticking up in the same place in her silhouette.

A local hardwood mill/supplier near me, whose entire customer base is local artisans, has recently gone HAM posting AI slop to their Instagram everyday, including both the images and descriptions. It's such a direct insult to their customers, it's insane.

EU folks now's a great time for a reminder that mass surveillance is inherently authoritarian. Let your representatives know that there is no such thing as a safe backdoor, and there is no place for authoritarianism and mass surveillance in Europe.

On a society scale, engineering fields are inherently about accountability. GenAI is being grossly used for accountability avoidance, and thus is antithetical to engineering.

Instead of all this press and attention for MapQuest, which is just another corporation, how about we get attention going toward OSM and other related open projects like organicmaps.app instead.

YouTube has tons of data showing that I'm way less likely to click on a video with clickbait, and way more likely to not watch all the way through for less descriptive titles, so if they are truly wanting to increase total watch time they should not ever being showing me the clickbait option.

What's dumb about YouTube's A/B system is that it eventually has one "win" and shows that to everyone, even signed-in viewers. If a creator takes the time to make multiple, for signed-in viewers, it should show what it thinks would be the most appealing for that individual account.

Now if Safari could actually treat modals as modal, because you still need to add lots of JS to make the user experience decent, for both assistive tech or if any scrolling is involved. My understanding is they already won their fight with the standards bodies though, so I'm not holding my breath.

@johngreensbluesky.bsky.social Can we get a definition check? The most common deffinition I'm finding for barbone is "vagrant". If this instrument is a thing, I would love to learn more about it. I'm finding other bar- instruments (barbaton/barbitos, barbat), but their descriptions don't match.
From the stats page of a Smush game, text that reads: Barbone; an old, large stringed instrument that was an ancestor of the double bass.

Hmm, I don't know. That one looks like it was probably a cropping error, because there's a straight vertical line at the edge, while the Wikipedia image doesn't have a straight vertical line there, so conceivably coincidence that they are right in the same area of the map.

Do we know what that previous incorrect border was going along? It looks like it cuts through the middle of the Tana municipality, so it wasn't even on a smaller administrative border?

Oh my, the way Safari handles accessibility around modal dialogs is a freaking nightmare. It intentionally makes them not actually modal, so you have to add aggressive JS and focus-trap elements to try and make the user experience not be confusing as heck.

Yes!!! Classes are way overused. Even outside of standard attributes, which should be the first go to, if what your styling is stateful, then a data-attr should be used instead of a class. Classes should only be used for *static* distinctions that html semantics do not provide.

Ah, so for 60Hz grid, are you saying it's common for the compressor to be vibrating dominantly at the 4th harmonic of grid frequency, and then the damping feet cause the whole mass to resonate at the 5th subharmonic of that? 60Hz * 4 / 5 = 48Hz
110
Greg Potter @gregpotter.me · 25/07/2026
My thought was to expect a fridge compressor's fundamental mechanical resonance to be a harmonic (or subharmonic) of the 50Hz grid frequency, unless there's a slipping belt, or something like that.
110
Greg Potter @gregpotter.me · 25/07/2026
The peak not being at 50Hz looks like it's probably because of the FFT window being too small / misaligned with 50Hz, especially with the first harmonic showing at 100Hz.

Nice to know! My use cases in the past were for things like pill tags/badges that were using system-ui/sans-serif for the font, so I hadn't run into those gotchas yet. It's a great thing to make a web component for.

Another running theme in the editor's corner does seem to be people requesting proper nouns. Will we eventually get the full set of planets and dwarf planets requested? Have there been others already besides Pluto and Saturn, that haven't made the editor's corner?

This could not be the case, but my intuition is that most plants have had more frequent reticulate evolution events over time than animals have, which makes clade hierarchy really messy to try to parse out, and makes a phylogenetic network more apt than a phylogenetic tree.
010
Greg Potter @gregpotter.me · 21/07/2026
In general, the common names for trees are screwy compared to our current phylogeny, for a whole host of different historical reasons, even coming from marketers selling non-domestic lumber via buzzword soup.

Growing up in NC, I feel like everyone called all seed cones pinecones, because they are the predominant type in the area, and because "pine" is also heavily used in the common names of many trees that are not in the genus Pinus.

Crossbreed of bullbaiting dog and pug dog → bulldog Crossbreed of bulldog and terrier → bull-terrier Bull-terrier bred for fighting pits → pit bull-terrier → pit bull → pitbull
000
Greg Potter @gregpotter.me · 21/07/2026
Per Wiktionary, pitbull is a multi-step shortening of something like "fighting-pit bull-baiting-dog pug-dog terrier", so another point there is: pit bull is already a super shortened form, so we may as well keep on shortening.

I agree, but I would say Nutter Butter might be slowly approaching genericide, though I don't think it is there yet — certainly not in the realms of kleenex, bubblewrap, or zipper; and definitely nowhere near the escalated heights of escalator.

I usually have more need for responsive block-axis text fit of single-line text. My go to for that is an inline svg with a script to size the svg's viewBox to the text element within it. const bbox = text.getBBox(); svg.setAttribute('viewBox', `${bbox.x} ${bbox.y} ${bbox.width} ${bbox.height}`);
