Two things : do you have a best or worst #authorvisit experience as a writer, teacher, librarian or kid? Also, I totally recommend @debbieohi.com 's #SchoolVisit "handbook" #kidlitchat

I think, too, a lot of this depends on the age group of the presentation. I think many of us have talked with teachers/librarians rather than kids, so that's a totally different thing. But a good school visit with kids is magical #kidlitchat

Good editors or critiquers make me a better writer with their thoughts and notes. It's not that they offer solutions (usually) but they help me understand what will make something better on levels that I'm not reaching. That's what I look for. #kidlitchat

Didja know that there's gonna be a #kidlitchat at 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacific today here on Bluesky? It happens every Tuesday, in fact - an hour of #kidlit chatting, camaraderie, and desserts that could only be better if even more of you joined the fun. Or maybe not better but bigger, at least. Join us!

Ideas ala Mode would be a good name for a podcast. I suppose it doesn't even have to be writing related. #kidlitchat

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
So far, we have a lot more saving of ideas than we do of ways to know which idea to go to. I think that's cuz it's often just one idea screams out or you go through a bunch and shrug and pick one.... No magic involved. Just a decision. #kidlitchat

I am always grateful that so many of you say "yes!" each week to #kidlitchat. I think this is very wise, of course, but I might have bias and, of course, there are 'acceptable no' reasons in our bylaws. :-) And do I hope to see you all here again next week? That's another "yes!"

It's always been a balancing act. And because it also become social for a lot of us, it gets... murky. Sometimes just hanging out here is needed. Other times, it's taking us away from something else! I am better now at seeing which is which, but saying no is... hard. #kidlitchat

One of the hardest things, I find, is when dealing with notes and knowing when something might be a great idea BUT might not be a great idea for what I'm trying to accomplish. Saying no to the note but yes to the "hmmm. this area is creating this reaction in someone" is not always easy #kidlitchat

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Sure, we got to this #Kidlitchat topic because neither of us could say no to it. But I'm otherwise actually pretty good at the 'no' thing. Usually :-)

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
TOPIC: Let's talk about saying "no!" We get demands on our time, get notes that might pull our story away from what we intended, and even our characters can tell us to go places we don't want to. How do you know how and when to say no to... anything? #kidlitchat

Dear editor: imagine once a week you could come chat with your #kidlit friends, broadly guided by a topic but really to build community. We call it #kidlitchat, and this amazing beast happens every Tuesday. You should join us, cuz the folks who come each week are THE best. See ya next week!

Yeah. And sometimes the x meets y creates a very clear picture. But I think in general, we want to query by showing why our story is unique. It's not like X or Y broadly but mixes elements of them, that we can specify, in a cool way. #kidlitchat

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Clarity and being specific is critical. What's the heart of your story, not just the bones of the plot and all.... #kidlitchat

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Admittedly, my long ago choice of comp as "Webster's Dictionary" probably didn't work for everyone as meaning "every word in my book is in it, so that's the connection" but we want to try and communicate in a way that's true to ourselves/our work, too #kidlitchat

Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I think it is tricky. I think this also points to what @boringstorybook.com was saying about you can't control expectations on the other side - a comp title could create a reaction you're not expecting. #kidlitchat
170
Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I am not an editor, but I think comp titles often aren't helpful unless your whole pitch makes it clear why those titles are legit comps. You could use The Hunger Games for teen action or dystopia or political intrigue or tone or female lead, etc., so how is it relevant for your book? #kidlitchat
391
Greg Pincus @gregpincus.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I think querying well is about clarity. What is it about your manuscript someone just has to know? How can you describe it/tease it/synopsize it in a way that makes someone say "yes. I get it. I will take a peak."? #kidlitchat
