I was admiring @rek's square series of drawings, in particular the day-7 tangle of lizardnewts, and it seemed to me like it was crying out to be a block print. But rather than do the proper work of carving it from linoleum, I chose to try taking a shortcut -- […] [Original post on merveilles.town]

a low-resolution 3D printed relief version of rek's day-7 drawtober image, ready for block printing

a set of basic block printing tools -- brayer, ink, etc.

a set of five black-ink prints of rek's image

a closeup of the final print quality, which is really quite low (with an added wash of watercolors after the fact)

Anyway, Emily must have been fun at parties, Charlotte seems like the one you'd want to be lifelong friends with, and Anne is the one you'd send in to do battle for you against whoever was being an asshole. Thanks for reading my (triple) book report.

Jane Eyre is the masterpiece. The language is incredibly beautiful and the characters are deep and compelling and the storytelling is so rich. It's got a weird and excellent gothic horrific story at its center, and the feminist angle comes through so strongly despite the characters all operating […]

Wuthering Heights is like a wild reality show. Everyone behaves incredibly badly and makes terrible decisions at every turn. Nobody is noble or admirable, at all? Even the novel's narrator is an unscrupulous untrustworthy wretch of a person, repeatedly causing everyone's lives to be worse while […]

Anne's "Wildfell" is both the most stridently Feminist (proto-feminist at least) and also the most overtly a tale of Christian morality. It's also the most artless as a narrative story. The main character spends a lot of time just delivering soliloquies where she's clearly just being a […]

Just finished reading The Tennant of Wildfell Hall, which means I've now read a book by each of the three Brontë sisters. The others so far are Jane Eyre by Charlotte, and Wuthering Heights by Emily. It's pretty fun to be able to compare and contrast? So I'll […] [Original post on merveilles.town]

Yesterday I briefly held a hummingbird in my hands because that was the easiest and gentlest way I could rescue it from the garage window - but I neglected to take a photo of the hummingbird poking its head out of the gap between my thumb and palm. So, please imagine it. Thank you.

Like the Voyager golden record, but a static copy of the whole Internet, encoded in DNA and encased in amber. Wrapped in a radio beacon with a small blue-green blinking light and placed on the back side of the moon. So that whenever they get here, they will know of the Eden we squandered.

Anyone have a referral to a scanning company who can take some 8mm and 16mm film reels and give me back fairly good quality digital files? I see that there are several out there which offer this service, so I'm looking for referrals that you've tried. The material is typical old family stuff […]
