Until 1938, the painting The Beggar (The Good-Natured Child) by Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller, one of the most significant Austrian painters of the 19th century, was owned by Irma Löwenstein, a Viennese Jew. Under Nazi rule, she was forced to sell it under duress.

To finance his survival, Wallerstein sold artworks, including the Kirchner painting. After his heirs filed restitution claims, it was agreed that the painting by Kirchner would remain at the Brücke Museum, which had acquired it in 1973. The museum made a compensation payment to the heirs.

In 2000, the Strasbourg Museum restituted Gustav Klimt's Die Erfüllung to Karl Grünwald's descendants. The Viennese antiquarian had sent it to Strasbourg in 1938 after Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany. Later, the German occupiers confiscated the 1.93 × 1.2 m painting, one of Klimt’s major works

Opposition grows to the German government's recent decision to reform the art restitution process in Germany by creating an arbitration tribunal to adjudicate claims. The main criticism is that this is not a reform but rather major steps backwards for art claimants. www.tachles.ch/artikel/inte...
