I’m not sure it’s the redesign of my dreams, but I do think it’s way better. The name just pops so much more.

I realize I lost the original question and just listed folks I thought looked great in these movies. So I’ll just say Minnie Driver probably wasn’t the best anyone has ever looked in movies, but I thought she looked great.

Good picks. I’ll add: Samantha Robinson in The Love Witch Rose McGowan in Planet Terror Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind Sean Young in Blade Runner Mel Gibson in Road Warrior Cary Grant in North by Northwest Jennifer Connelly in Top Gun Maverick Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma Minnie Driver in Big Night

The belief that LLM creators have to license all this content — in opposition to the principles of fair use — is 1) a desire for LLMs to have gaps in their knowledge, which is in nobody’s interest, and 2) a wish that they be developed and owned only by the wealthiest companies, and no one else.

Huh… you might have found a bug! After all this time. :) (Or, looking at the code — maybe an "issue" that I didn't feel like cleaning up and hoped nobody would notice.) I will look into ways of fixing this. In the meantime: I'm sorry I've caused you excess frustration!

I don't think today's LLMs are conscious. That said, Chiang seems to be centering his argument on the idea that something that can be turned-off almost certainly can't be conscious. I think that argument is categorically wrong. Caveat: Chiang is a lot smarter than me so I might be totally off-base.

I liked the movie overall, but his presence was my only misgiving. First, that this subplot was even thought necessary; second, that it was Mark Duplass, who I couldn't accept as being anyone other than "Mark Duplass." (He wasn't given enough screentime to establish himself as anyone else.)

One note of caution: the Giant Playdate will not be making the PRGE trip with us this year. (wow is it heavy) But we will have other fun things in the booth to see and check out!

Depends on your definition of "work"! Yes it does turn, and can flip / dock inside the unit. But no, it is not connected to any playable hardware.

Probably an impossible question to answer, but do the squids ever "win" this battle? (Or does "winning" for the squid simply equate to "getting away"?)

After this Kimmel suspension, and the senseless Stephanopolous settlement before it… I think I’m done with Disney. Likely not forever, but for a while. I have remarkably few warm feelings about the company they are now, or Bob Iger. Disney is a company I’ve spent my entire life admiring.

Confirmed, that this is an extremely fun game and a good way to spend ~4 hours. (I like games of this length.) A fun video game for people who don't really like video games. Disclaimer: I work for the publisher. That's not why I'm writing this. I just really like the game.

It can be tricky. Check out this video I just made. 1. Start with your Playdate unlocked. 2. Hold Lock button for 7 seconds. (Screen will freeze.) 3. Screen goes blank. (It's OFF now, until you press the Lock button which turns it back ON.)

120

Greg Maletic @gregmaletic.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

If your Playdate is unlocked, hold the lock button for 7 seconds. It’ll shut off completely. (Caveat: it also won’t download any games; won’t notify you of OS updates, etc.)

110

Greg Maletic @gregmaletic.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

Eh, depending upon how you tally it, maybe $135. It is an expensive product to make. And if we could afford to sell it for less, we absolutely would. On the plus side, though it is not inexpensive, we do think it's a good value; we're proud of it; lots of people love it. So many good, unique games.

Greg Maletic @gregmaletic.bsky.social · 04/07/2025

Our fully landed costs are about $140/unit. That's not including the overhead of writing the OS, marketing, support, etc.

I think Cuban’s arguing that’s a bad question, since knowing the countries in ASEAN isn’t close to the “hardest strategic question” he’ll face. It’s a question that an aide would correct him on once, then he’d know it. Learning that stuff is the easy part of the job.
