Here's an investment advice vagueskeet for you: I would wager the most underappreciated art asset of the next decade or so is an original copy of Matisse's "Jazz," or at the very least one of its "Icarus" pochoirs. Real theraputized ones know.

Why is it that as virtually every sector over the past 50 years has seen incredible improvement in productivity, the cost of constructing things like buildings or infrastructure is so much higher? A new paper called 'Chain Drain' might offer an answer. challengercities.substack.com/p/challenger...

WSJ: “Carney is pressing to join the EU’s study-abroad program, as well, hoping a generation of Europeans and Canadians will attend university in each other’s homelands.” Oh, so I can send my kids to Leiden for 3,000 euros/yr and you can send yours to McGill for $50K? Deal.

Ending here for now, but the question Toronto residents and their representatives should be asking is whether YTZ expansion represents the highest and best use of funds and its location. Based on decades of research — which Florida knows better than I do! — I find it hard to make that case. 14/x

Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
To cover the rest of his arguments: • Want more travelers to visit downtown — or anywhere in the GTA for that matter? Make it faster and easier to reach YYZ by any means necessary. • Comparing airports to urban train stations is misdirection. • Global city networks require global air hubs. 13/x

In 2011, NYC's Regional Plan Association — which advocates on behalf of the city's business interests — dreamed of a new island mega-hub to replace LGA, JFK, and EWR.... before concluding NYC is stuck with the ones it has. They did not consider this to be success. rpa.org/work/reports... 12/x

Look at Chicago's Midway, whose airfield is unhappily crammed into a single square mile. Or O'Hare, for that matter, which paved over a cemetery in its last major airfield expansion. Or Denver, which closed Stapleton and opened North America's last greenfield hub to replace it in 1995. 11/x

Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Florida notes cities typically have multiple airports, citing NYC and London. But that's mistaking path dependency for deliberate policy. As I wrote in AEROTROPOLIS, "we built our airports before we knew what they were for," and later, cities had no choice but to expand them. 10/x
161
Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Then there's the matter of whether cities should split their air service. Again, no. "One large hub attracts significantly more transfer passengers than two hubs of half the size," the OECD concluded in 2013. www.itf-oecd.org/sites/defaul... The ideal is a single hub with great ground access. 9/x

Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Why is YTZ expansion bad policy compared to focusing on YYZ? Because airports (and their cities) benefit from network effects — the more destinations the better, the longer-haul the better. YTZ's upside has a hard ceiling, even with expansion. YYZ's does not. 8/x
141
Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Is expanding YTZ better policy than expanding YYZ — and not just in terms of runways and gates, but also ground access and the # of destinations? Again, the research is clear: No. I talked with Alex Bozikovic about this a while back: bsky.app/profile/alex... 7/x

Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Is expanding YTZ to cater to knowledge workers good policy? Well, Toronto would certainly gain more of them. The research on that is clear — better air service attracts more workers. But that effect is dampened when your destinations are limited to North America and pax are boycotting them. 6/x
130
Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 21/05/2026
Richard Florida's personal preferences should not be policy, either. But catering to the consumption habits of high-income knowledge workers is the foundation of his creative class theory, and the point of his opening anecdote, I assume. (We can debate that theory another day. Many have.) 5/x

Florida praises YTZ as "the world’s first truly walkable, mixed-use urban airport on a downtown lakefront." Is that cool? Hell, yes! I'm flying in next week and walking to my hotel, in fact. But: 1. My preferences are not policy. 2. Is that good policy? 3. Is it better than expanding Pearson? 4/x

Billy Bishop's own traffic declined last year, from 2m pax in 2024 to 1.7m. You can expand the airport, but you cannot compel Canadians to fly to the States, nor can you compel airlines to fly half-empty planes when the price curve of jet fuel is going vertically up. So far, not convincing. 3/x

And if she thinks airport expansion aligns with her riding's interests, then she should use evidence-based arguments to make that case. Personal usage is neither a qualification nor a justification. Or shouldn't be, anyway. And yet.

Greg Lindsay @greglindsay.org · 08/05/2026
As an MP, I expect her to center the interests of her riding's constituents, and as a minister, to examine it through the prism of her file. If she sees herself as a constituent of the airport — that it exists to advance her own personal interests — then I think she has it precisely backwards.

Florida's not just wrong on this score, he's totally disingenuous. He's read all the same literature I have regarding the importance of large, centralized hubs versus a constellation of smaller airports. I know because he told me himself when he agreed to *blurb my book.*
