Since every day now is in some possibly world-ending sense April Fool's Day, I hope there will be no need for my yearly reminder that [sing it with me, perhaps to the tune of Deutschland Über Alles or even California Über Alles] April Fools' Day is for assholes.

Best of all movies. I forgot he won an Oscar, too.

Works fine as an analog to "was best friends with" if it's the "I was"/plural thing that's bothering you.

Mere days ago I was talking to someone about how great Call Me By Your Name was and had to go into my spiel about how important it is not to ruin everything by reading the sequel.

This came across my feed and it's always surreal when I have cause to remember my Russian phonetics teacher in a dorm cafeteria in Bloomington in the 90s saying "my son is going to be on tv."

I have wondered about this, too. How do people know that someone has lost it when his entire brand is a kind of mean incoherence? Everyone is desensitized to the idea that he may simply be cognitively non functional because being cognitively intact is prissy elistist liberal cuck stuff.

The licensing process for heterosexuality sounds really tricky.

That stupid La Palma thing meets WORDLE. What, that's as close as I get to playing video games.

As a homosexual and a banana fan, I am fascinated to think what the no-homo way of eating a banana is. Do you merely have to chop it up so it's no longer phallic or do you have to go the extra mile, mash it up, and sculpt it to resemble lady parts? That seems time-consuming.

Used DuoLingo a couple of years ago and it was a bad way to learn a language; started again recently and it's like a real-time Black Mirror episode/maybe something devised by Roko's Basilisk. Theory: the defining trait of the internet is that it is where things get worse faster than anywhere else.

Oy, must be the 2020s version of meeting a gay man in the 90s and saying "so when you have sex, are you the man or the woman?" Yes, now you know something about me. No, that does not make our further conversation an AMA reddit thread.

The "snapchatting you my war plans" thing takes me right back to that sweet, naive moment when we thought "grab 'em by the pussy" was going to rid us of this meddlesome priest. Let's not go back to hoping actions have consequences. It sucks too much when it turns out they don't, at all.

Or "Oktavian Maria Ehrenreich Bonaventura Fernand Hyacinth Rofrano," though it'll let you work in "Favorite fach: mezzo-soprano" for the rhyme.

I'm just going to say Taylor Swift's 1989 and pretend it came out in 1989 because there is not a lot of perfect music from the actual 1980s

This is true, of course, but there's always this point where a statement about what's going on pivots to the things we "let slide" without any information on how not to let it slide. I would love not to let any of this slide, but I'm just a very distraught person.

Oh like in the last two years I think. I was like "why are we talking about music theory suddenly?" Maybe just every time someone says it, sing "aaaaa-men" in a IV-I progression and when they look at you like you're cray, say "it's a plagal cadence, isn't that what we were talking about?"

I generally mildly dislike the show but am nervously hoping my Max subscription expires later than I think it does so I can keep watching Parker Posey's immediately legendary performance. No spoilers but two of her lines made me laugh out loud last night.

For the obvious "this is not a cognitively functional person" thing, in with all the horrifying stuff, is the talk of Canada as the 51st state. If anyone doesn't read that stuff and see a man who has lost his capacity to reason, they are just determined not to see it.

Ha, sounds about right. I left in 1998 and didn't move back for years, but sometime in there the change from "college town with a legislature slapped on" to "fairly large city/tech hub" happened and the cultural adjustment was a complicated one.

Kieran Culkin talking about children s always a good reminder for me that the actors whereof you think "oh jeez, we would be such good pals" are in fact very likely people with whom you have nothing at all in common. (I am very thrilled that he won for this beautiful performance.)

I don't have an opinion but I wonder if it's just sort of already movie-adjacent/familiar because of Amadeus. (Which, ok, upon googling is gaaah, over 30 years old, so maybe this is a dumb theory.)

Hm. So. I have been giving this thing a shot, commenting some, posting some. The idea was to feel engaged with some communities I'm interested in (writers, shrinks, Texans...) It is not really doing that, the same way Twitter didn't. It just feels like talking while other people talk. I might bail!

Austin in the 90s was, foodwise, about like other towns its size. One or two places for Thai, Pho, Indian. Not a lot but they were pretty good and people went, and if they wanted more, they went to Houston. I doubt the situation was a lot different in medium sized towns on the coasts.

I guess there was some point to it theoretically in that plenty of Americans knew Tex Mex and not interior Mexican but like, great case of "¿por que no los dos?"

Greg Freed @gregfreed.bsky.social · 06/01/2025
I have the vague idea some of this is Diana Kennedy's fault. Her condescension about Tex Mex was dressed up as good taste and it's catnip to a certain kind of foodie.

I am making Rancho Gordo beans in the slow cooker and watching the cat freak out about her own tail and only have one work thing to do today. God willin' and the power grid don't croak, I'm having a nice Texas Freeze. I guess I'm choosing to sort of ignore/forget the other thing.

Social media is/are doing an interesting job of tearing apart my understanding of my own interest in culture. Things that look like casual conversations I would have about actors or films look really fucking stupid when I see them as posts some bot is sharing with ten million people.

This would be my advice for Texas as well. Weirdly, I have heard that Lexington, where I grew up, now has such a large Mexican population people call it Mexington. In the 80s, not so.

Ah, you're speaking of a finer kind of burrito! I am in the Guinness Book as the only person who ever didn't like living in the Bay Area but even I will concede that the burritoculture is beyond reproach. That one place on like 18th and Valencia (?) was not a burrito that one would eat lukewarm.

Ok ok, it is an acquired taste. I used to live upper, upper Manhattan and sometimes was in the mood for Chipotle and there wasn't one for miles, so by the time I got home on the subway I had a mushed, lukewarm burrito. But I accept your puzzled emoji.

Greg Freed @gregfreed.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
Order burritos. They are secretly best when slightly cold and mushed. The government does not want you to know this.

Sometimes there is a thaw in such hostilities. There's a cat who roams my complex and mine, an indoor cat, used to just HOWL at him and now they kind of just regard each other curiously through the glass door.

I have watched the cliffhanger thrice including its original "airing" and feel like the second season is facing impossible expectations in the demographic consisting of me.
