That pitch that hit Rafaela would be an interesting test for the new check swing challenge system. He took his hands off the bat, but the bat completed the swing. Letting go of the bat doesn't cancel out your swing, and I'm pretty sure the system just looks at the bat and not your hand position.

A lot of sports psychology is about never letting doubt creep into your mind. Players don't like to second-guess themselves and I always wonder if that plays into it. Even if they know deep down they are likely wrong.

The rule is fine as long as the umpires don’t forget how many outs there are in the inning and properly signal that the run counts so the Jays know to appeal. Going back and changing it to a timing play 17 mins later and giving the Sox the run is the icky part.
