Fable's slower adoption + increased interest in cheaper models has shown signs diminishing returns in frontier development. You can portray a strategic pivot in an altruistic light and discourage others from pushing the frontier

Argentina's also the nearest location to it, and the main British purpose for it was a whaling hub and ship repair stop. There were also complaints about ships on the islands infringing on Argentine fishing territories

There's also a broader issue of British imperialism against Argentina. They had tried around 1800 to take over the Buenos aires and through the 19th century there was the perception of unfair trade details and meddling in Argentine affairs

The islands were congested but Argentina claimed them in the early 19th and there were some failed settlements attempts. The brits who also had tried claiming it and had some settlement attempts sent a fleet to take it over in the 1830s then sent pastoral settlers to lock it in

In a proportional parliamentary system he woulda had a nice, if brief run, as a niche party that the government has to rely on for coalition reasons

This is a good piece. It gets at my confusion over people freaking out at bond yields hitting 2007 numbers. Inflation is above target and debt is twice as high: that seems within expectations and not some crisis.

Doesn't seem like a bad outcome. If the party is cohesive, they can coordinate an outcome. If they aren't (like Republicans in past cycles) there will be a split and voters will sort the preference

Him winning with a bigger vote, nearly a majority is what really got me. Before I could say the countries institutions were broken and stupid. They still are, but it's also the voters.

Similarly in malleability, parliament funkadelic influenced music in the 80s/90s with groups like the red hot chilli peppers and dr dre. Racial lines treat these separately but stylistically they are drawing from the same well

Even pre-2016 things were drifting away from atlanticism. Obama wasn't against it or anything, but he was shifting away from it. His primary alliance effort ttp had no euro involvement

them not being trump-y has been nice, but unfortunately none of them speak out against this shit. Theyre under no obligations to, but having someone like rapinoe or lebron who speaks up against this stuff is how you can actually seperate the team from the admin

For comparison the multiple failed attempts eventually led Bolivar to seek Haitian help in exile and solidified an abolitionist stance

If the revolution fails then it seems like it reignites again during the French revolution and during the Napoleonic wars. I do wonder how the delays affect the course though. Haitian independence and the threat of slave revolts would probably scare the planter class

Similarly, the post covid increases in immigration aren't a US exclusive event. Canada and European countries also saw large increases in immigration largely due to similarly improving economies

As for Saudi and the others I would say the same as mamdani. States can have dominant traditions, but institutionalizing and creating legal hierarchies is bad

The UKs protestant institutions were a huge problem for centuries and created a lot of oppression and social unrest, so yes it's bad. Reforms through the decades like catholic emancipation have remedied that largely. Still, going further like removing lords spiritual would be good

At this point Iran also has to put up for their proxies. Before being attacked themselves, they didn't do much when Lebanon and yemen were being bombed

Counterpoint: the natural born citizenship clause is stupid, but it will force zohran to pursue speakership of the house, and this will be what finally brings congressional supremacy

From the FT, the other parties both in opposition and government want more violence
Except from the financial times:

"""
Naftali Bennett, the right-wing former prime minister widely regarded as one of Netanyahu’s main rivals in Israel’s looming election, accused him of “losing control over Israeli sovereignty”.

Yair Lapid, head of the biggest opposition party Yesh Atid, assailed Netanyahu for presiding over a “vassal state”, while Gadi Eisenkot, head of the centrist Yashar party, wrote on X: “There has never been a prime minister in Israel who accepted such a humiliating demand.”

There was also criticism from within the ranks of Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, with national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urging him to ignore Trump’s demands and ratchet up the campaign against Hizbollah

Vince McMahon also wouldn't fire people himself and would delegate that to underlings. Like Trump, he also built an onscreen persona as a hardass who loved firing people. it's a weird dichotomy: publicly they present as blistering authoritarians. Privately they kiss ass and hide

In the long run you can write off the post Johnson PMs as incompetent transitionary PMs. You have to take time to explain the mess may and Johnson made

Greg @gregawd.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
I don't see how may isn't bottom of the list. She signed up for a bad situation, fumbled around the whole time and kept making her position worse. The others are incompetents sitting in the mess she created. Johnson's handling of COVID is the only thing I see worse

This comes up in immigration discourse in the US. I like the "nation of immigrants" idea, but some take this to mean that we are the only place with significant immigration. The US immigration rate meanwhile is pretty standard compared to large European countries

There was a video on this from thinking basketball. Shai is great at changing direction which leads defenders into checking him with their hands when beat. Shai then sells the contact. Some players like ant, push through and don't sell the contact, but shais not flopping
