Sometimes history can shock you more than a novel ever could...this is one of those times for me

First they gave placards to the cops, and I did not speak out. Then they gave placards to the teachers and I did not speak out. Then they gave placards to the doormen and I did not speak out. Then no one paid for any parking because what even is a placard anyway?

Inexplicable, right? No idea how inner suburban/Bronx stations are only getting (half-)hourly service off-peak. Plus the takt changes constantly for no good reason

Wow! La nuova stazione di pozzuoli mi sembra buona! Ho visto alcuni altri lavori sulla cumana negli ultimi anni (rinnovazioni di piattaforme sopratutto). Mi interesserebbe vedere le differenze prima e dopo lavori

Found an absolutely, positively absurd stat about Tokyo railways stats: Shibuya - Harajuku section of the JR East Yamamoto Line (the lime green line in the image) has more than a billion passengers going through that tunnel everyday! Credit to: anita.garden/japanrail/

Just rode an express Metro-North train through White Plains and apparently they use Spanish Solution boarding. Are there any other MTA railway/subway stations that do that? I thought I saw subways actively avoid doing so (e.g.: 7 trains in Flushing)

I wonder how many people do the pro gamer move of doing a park and ride to a commuter rail station and take the train in. Most middle/far out stations have free parking even. Then again, i don’t know how many Americans would trust being without their car in NYC simply out of car use inertia

I wonder if travel time variability factors into this. Buses are usually more variable which could help explain the distaste for buses versus rail (i didn’t get to read the report so correct me if this was controlled for!)

Reminds me of the covid era keep 6 feet apart stickers. They do so little to improve safety and are going to degrade for who knows how long until they get taken down

Closest I can think of is Noam Chomsky describing how US news outlets talk about elections in friendly vs antagonistic countries in Manufacturing Consent. Were the elections “plagued by long lines” or “overflowing with enthusiastic voters”

So impressive that 2 Westchester, New York cities are on the list given how poor the local, suburban bus service (Bee-Line) is (obviously Metro-North exists as well). They account for about half of all of Bee-Line’s ridership (mostly as connections to the subway due to fare reciprocity)

Looks pretty nice. It’s a missed opportunity to make a motorcycle saddle as a seat while waiting for the tram.

Not to take away from the impressive growth but to put the numbers in perspective: one month of Seattle’s light rail ridership is a very busy weekday on the NYC subway

Do you know how closely it correlates with overall ridership? Definitely seems like smoking is outpacing general ridership but could be an interesting stat

The answer is E! The attempt at towing his car for obscuring his license plate 7 months ago was unsuccessful (probably because the fenders are so low it’s hard to tow without damaging the vehicle). I hate to generalize…but c’mon!!

Why did my neighbor’s car get booted? Was it for: A. removing his muffler (causing his neighbors to lose sleep) B. For standing (constantly) in a school zone with said lack of muffler) C. having 10 traffic violations in the past year D. Obscuring their license plate E. Not paying child support?

The muscle car owner who always parks outside of my apartment sees nothing wrong with revving his non-mufflered engine for 5 minutes every morning — outside of a school no less! And then there’s the honking… Only distant parts of parks really give you any respite

there is something poetic about how MAGAs in their 12 mpg F-150s will be hit the hardest while coastal libs who take transit will have the least exposure to skyrocketing oil prices

Also the majority of low income riders will use the subway after the bus, regardless. So it’s not clear how this would save riders money if they don’t change their travel patterns!

Transit folks: does anyone have something to reference for the time value of money? I want to calculate at what income level a person would choose one route over another if their expected earnings were taken into account (e.g.: when is an extra 30 that saves $20 worth it).

If you want to feel like a skilled negotiator all you have to do is tell your current provider that the competitor is offering a lower price. I did it and my current provider offered me lower than what I claimed the competitor was offering 🤷‍♂️

The embassies in Trieste are so beautiful — even by italian standards. Definitely more of a residential feel to the embassies to my American eyes. I remember seeing somewhat smaller/less influential countries’ embassies being there (nordics, some African countries)
