From EANY Executive Director Vanessa Fajans-Turner: As the Legislature adjourns for the year, I have mixed feelings about where New York stands. Gov. Hochul and lawmakers weakened our landmark climate law at a time when we are facing worsening floods and extreme heat, and rising energy costs.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing to roll back NY’s climate law — a stunning reversal for Hochul, a 2025 TIME100 Climate Leader who’s previously understood that states must step in when D.C. retreats. In a new TIME op-ed, EANY’s Vanessa Fajans-Turner and Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson tell the story.

Dick was a tireless environmental advocate, who’s dedication and force led to the preservation of 100,000 acres of land in the Long Island Pine Barrens. We are holding his family and everyone who loves him closely in our hearts, as we recommit to protecting New York’s air, water & climate.

NYC’s next decarbonization milestone is coming quickly, but less than half or buildings are on track to meet the 2030 emissions targets. That means many buildings face expensive penalties if upgrades aren’t made in time.

🚨The Trump administration’s brazen attempt to repeal the EPA’s endangerment finding (the framework that greenhouse gases harm public health, which underpins federal climate regulation) is stalling, for an embarrassing reason (for them): they fear it won’t survive in court.

New York’s 120-year-old subway system is increasingly under strain due to climate change. Extreme downpours flood stations built close to street level; heat waves bake platforms whose airflow can’t keep up with today’s extreme weather.

The Trump Administration is moving to limit federal protections against PFAS “forever chemicals” in drinking water. This puts our communities at further risk of exposure to dangerous toxic chemicals. New Yorkers should be able to trust what’s coming out of the tap.

When Washington won’t stand up for our right to clean water, New York has an obligation and the legal authority to take action to protect all New Yorkers. Yet, New York’s authority is being threatened by the Trump Administration to push another pipeline we can’t afford.

PFAS “forever chemicals” are often found in biosolids (sewage sludge used for fertilizer) and are linked to cancers and other health risks. The New York Farm Bureau says poisonous sewage sludge should not be spread on New York’s agricultural land — and we couldn’t agree more.

🔔 New York has adopted its 2025 State Energy Plan, but it doesn’t go far enough in centering renewables and clean energy. The plan doubles down on an “all-of-the-above” mix that includes expanded fossil fuels that New Yorkers can’t afford.

TAKE ACTION: This year, both the Senate & Assembly passed S.1548/ A.1502, a bill that will stop toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” from being added to our menstrual products. Now it’s sitting on the Governor's desk. We need your voice to show that New Yorkers demand safe and clean menstrual products.
