Random question but are you on a laptop with AMD integrated graphics?

I don't know all the details of your setup, but if you stick to user-friendly distributions like Mint or Fedora you shouldn't be having a problem like that. If you use Arch or something independent, you're expected to configure your system properly.

I'm using Unity as well for a project I'm working on with some friends, and I found a lot of useful tips from Linux-Editor tag on the forums: discussions.unity.com/tag/linux-ed.... It's insane how in 2026 a lot of basic things are still broken even though Unity advertises official support for Linux.

GrapheneOS is great if you already have a Pixel phone, but for people trying to avoid supporting Google by buying one of their phones, they probably want to use LineageOS or CalyxOS since they support other Android manufacturers (i.e. Fairphone).

Phones are tough because you have Linux phones, but their price to performance value is often terrible, and popular mobile apps only support Android and iOS. Android gives you a lot of choices for device manufacturers, but to take away control from a manufacturer, you need an unlockable bootloader.

Your alternative choices can look "bad" as well such as Linux Mint not having a stable Wayland session for Cinnamon, so it's important to research what each distro claims to provide and the drawbacks reported by its users.

I would say Fedora's main flaws are the way SELinux and other security features are configured can be way too aggressive for home use, and you have to rely on rpmfusion.org software in some cases, but it's still one of if not the best "it just works" distributions out there.

Also for the locale file, make sure you're editing /etc/locale.conf (don't forget locale with an e) and that your locale is on the list provided by the locale -a command.

1. Even with AI assistance reducing the effort a bit, what made you change your mind about supporting other operating systems? 2. Can Paint.NET in WINE offer advantages over Pinta? 3. Are you going to try out local AI models to prevent your copyrighted code from entering training data?

I forgot to mention that this only covers installation of these tools, and providing configuration and setting them up with Neovim is a separate concern. For example, for language servers you would use the nvim-lspconfig plugin to provide default configs for language servers and read :help vim.lsp

I looked into it and it turns out Vim provided support for a few scripting languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua, etc.), but the problem was support for each language had to be optionally compiled in, and the each language only got a limited Vim API meaning VimScript often had to be called anyways.

Greenman @greenmanx.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Oh nice I've been using Neovim for a while and it's my favorite editor now. A big thing it did to improve Vim was introducing Lua as a scripting language for plugins which developers can pick up a lot faster than VimScript. You can find a lot of good plugins here: dotfyle.com

No because Linux is all about running what you want on your system. People invest in learning Emacs, Neovim, Kakoune, Helix, or something similar to increase their text editing productivity and to customize their editor from the ground up. If what you use works for you, there's no reason to switch.

Not even joking this is possible even in Windows. The dynamic context menu that shows some recent channels is the difficult part here since it involves writing C++ to interface with the Windows Shell API (specifically learn.microsoft.com/en-us/window...).

almost feel too secure at times with how they block everything, and Linux Mint hasn't finished the Wayland session for Cinnamon meaning the user can be screwed if there's an X11 bug that is fixed with "just use Wayland".

See this is where it gets tricky because between Ubuntu, Fedora, and Linux Mint, each of them have gotchas that can ruin the experience in specific cases. Ubuntu overriding apt to prefer snaps makes it hard to install a native package when the snap sandbox causes issues, Fedora's SELinux policies-

This FAQ answer from the Arch Wiki is the reason I don't recommend it to new users. I always recommend Fedora KDE or Linux Mint Cinnamon since they are tried and true "it just works" distributions that provide desktop environments that provide a lot of customization without touching any code.

Even if you're willing to do the research to adapt and understand issues along the way, there are some workflows that require software that flat out doesn't run on Linux even with WINE. There are still things you can do to improve your computing experience if you're on Windows for example.

Debian doesn't require this in the approved proposal, but as long as they hold their foot down about enforcing standards for the code, it should eliminate low effort AI slop. If AI contributions add more technical debt to the project, good automated testing strategies will become more important.

Greenman @greenmanx.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
The problem is there isn't a reliable methodology for identifying AI generated code even if projects want to ban it outright. The best course of action now is requiring the disclosure of AI generated code (even if some commits fly under the radar) to filter it out if it causes issues down the road.

The problem is it's inevitable that some contributors will try to use AI, so if one of the proposals has to go through, I hope it's one where disclosing the usage of AI is required. Being able to easily identify commits created with AI will make it easier to undo damage if there is any.

If you want a quick cheatsheet on a system with curl installed, run the following command: curl cheat.sh/zip (where zip can be almost any other Linux command). Sometimes there are complicated commands where instead of trying to memorize options, you just consult the manual page (i.e. man gcc).

I'm not sure how the USB got corrupted, but you'll need to use another device to flash the Linux Mint ISO again. If the SSD was old, it's possible that it was on its last legs and the installation process wrote enough data to finally kill it off. You might also need to reseat the CMOS battery.

You're only truly bricked if your laptop turned off during a BIOS update. The bootable USB you used to start installing Linux Mint should have all the tools you need to get unstuck. My guess as to what happened is a Windows update messed with the GRUB bootloader and it needs to be reinstalled.

If your games are public on your Steam profile, you can paste a link to it on www.protondb.com/profile to see if any games you play don't work. Most of the time if a game doesn't work it's because it has an anti-cheat with Linux support turned off.

You can either disable passwords for sudo by adding NOPASSWD: ALL to your user or group entry in /etc/sudoers (only edit with visudo), or you can install the SSH agent PAM module (pam_ssh_agent_auth package on most distributions) and read its man page to allow sudo to authenticate with it.

Unfortunately you can't do anything if a game developer uses an anti-cheat with Linux support disabled. For the office suite, LibreOffice and OnlyOffice have very strong compatibility with Microsoft Office file formats, and it's not too difficult to install Microsoft fonts on most distributions.

When you have a native game (right picture), the code runs directly on your computer in Linux. When a game uses WINE/Proton (left picture), it's because it was only made for Windows, so when the code runs any Windows-specific functionality needs to be translated to Linux equivalents.

I wonder if those people would call Linus Torvalds a noob for using Fedora with GNOME. Distribution choice is about personal requirements and preferences, and once you have enough Linux experience you can figure out how to make almost any distribution do what you need.
