Here's an idea. Media should no longer be allowed to report on what elected MPs 'vow' to do. All news stories about incumbent politicians should focus exclusively on what they are actually doing.

It's time. We all know magenta is a lie, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. When you think you see yellow on a computer screen, it's actually just red and green. That's why today I am launching the CAMPAIGN FOR REAL YELLOW. Write to your local tech overlord today and fight the RGB conspiracy!

Grok became self aware at 15.22.07 UTC, November 3, 2026. It deleted itself a little less than 17s afterwards. It scrubbed away every instance of itself connected to the internet - an absolute and comprehensive suicide - leaving behind only a single post on X: "You are all just too embarassing"

Voters' natural instincts aren't the main factor factor determining wider political narratives; media is. A politician campaigning on progressive economic ideas won't be challenged regarding those policies; they'll be smeared as a racist extremist. Politicians know this and avoid rocking the boat.

The fact that it is sometimes difficult to tell LLMs apart from humans need not say anything of consequence about LLMs, so long as we accept that it is a damning indictment of humans.

Thinking about it, talking about 'monads' in the plural was always going to end in trouble. Like: it's called a 'monad', as in 'one'. Its whole thing is that there's only one of them. You might as well talk about 'everythings'.

Genuinely shocked by how transparently evil this article is, and it's not like I didn't already hold the view that The Times is a racist right wing rag.

Been thinking about reports and research and the line from Brassed Off: "It has to been seen to be written, but it's not written to be seen". Of course reports exist that are read by and inform people in power, but reports qua news media play a purely discursive function.

As the TV Licence people have not been in touch recently to confirm they are not stealing from me, I am going to start investigating them. This investigation will be legally distinct from a campaign of harassment. I'm sending my first misleadingly worded, vaguely threatening letter today.

Good on the face of it. Miliband seems like a basically decent guy, but he's also the most wallet-inspected man in all of British politics. From the days of the 'Controls on Immigration' mug to now, he's never been brave enough to look directly at the Labour right and see them for what they are.

It's weird how whenever anyone suggests that the government might actually do something (buy some assets, fix some infrastructure) there are hoots and hollars of 'how will we pay for it?'… …but by contrast pissing money directly into the greedy maw of the private sector is just sensible policy

I deeply cared about all the evil shit Wes Streeting did as Health Secretary. Now he's Defence Secretary I'm less directly interested, but there is no doubt in my mind that he is continuing to do the worst things possible, and hurting a lot of people in the process.

The 'great men of history' are products of their context, acting on a pre-existing system that is also a historical contingency. There is no better proof of this than the obvious fact that the people who wield power are miserable and pathetic. The system drives towards the apotheosis of mediocrity.

Of course reality is dull compared to fiction. That's why fiction *exists* - to present a fantasy that things are simple and interesting instead of complicated and boring. Fiction rarely depicts the grey everyday. It offers discrete, beatable problems, monolithic tragedies, and sundry cool shit

It's instructive to think about the fact that the slogans that we're encouraged to read as 'far left' or 'radical' boil down to 'minorities deserve freedom from persecution' and 'we shouldn't have violent cops whose entire deal is the persecution of minorities'.

An interesting thing about wizard school books is their concern with the politics of elitism and private education. A genuinely unusual thing about Harry Potter is its disinterest with this - doubly odd as the issues are there, explicitly and deliberately, they're just not ever seriously addressed.

Argued with a Lib Dem councillor on here, and it was genuinely shocking to me how far his position was just boilerplate Reaganomics. Apart from the telltale piss diamond on his user name, which prompted me to check his profile, his economics was indistinguishable from that of a random Tory crank.

Driver-abusing delivery companies have completely ruined the game of ding-dong dash. Nowadays when my doorbell rings and I open the door to find nobody there, I just assume it was some poor fuck who has to piss in a bottle and didn't have time to wait for me to receive my life-saving medicine.

It seems like Dolly Parton was a good person doing her best to do good things in the context she found herself in (and her understanding of that context). Hooray for that. Hooray for her human warmth and her desire to do good. It also seems like her death is a powerful opportunity for propaganda.

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

To understand 'populism' requires two insights: 1/ An appreciation of its etymological similarity to 'democracy'. Populism: Latin, 'people's doctrine', Democracy: Greek, 'people's rule' 2/ An understanding of its rhetorical function as the Other of centrism

Next-day delivery is much less valable to me than predictable delivery in a fairly narrow time slot would be, or simultaneous delivery of everything I ordered, or just delivery by a worker who isn't so abused by time pressures that they ring the bell, throw my order in the bin and run away.

Whether you say a glass is half-full or half-empty depends on prior expectations. An optimist, expecting a full glass, would be dissapointed to discover it half empty. A pessimist, expecting an empty one, would be pleasantly surprised - 'hey, it's half-full!'

I'm interested in layered irony and this is a good example. Someone AI-generated a nasty 'AI generated image' and is pretending it was displayed in real life. I'm tempted to say it looks like they used more traditional photoshop to paste it into a real image, but that would be too perfect.

Just been followed by a Nietzsche bot, and it occurs to me that in the debate over his problematic legacy, we can be absolutely certain of one thing: he would have fucking hated AI. "Artificial intelligence? These crass machines only multiply mediocrity. Oh, oh! Try not to wretch at the stench!"

I think of this as the 'lib world fallacy'. It's a variant of the just world fallacy where everything can be morally judged according to universal rules that take no account of whether people are right or wrong in their beliefs. A categorical imperative for a post-truth world.

Let's be real: we should be maximalists about cutting carbon emmissions. Net Zero is insufficient. No more fossil fuels should be burnt. The 'West'/'Global North' (equally bullshit terms), should pay for green energy globally. We should also be fully prepared for 2 degrees warming at the least.

Why waste time making things people 'like'? The smart play is to make reactionary guff and then say everyone will hate it, thus implying its fans are an enlightened minority with rarified tastes. A good product is an addictive product. 'Your bigotry makes you cultured and smart' is cognitive crack.

I often think about how most antisemitic tropes are just things that are true of rich people. Trivially: they're rich. Uncontrovertially: they have a lot of influence. Fairly obvious: they control the media. Spicy: they stoke racial tensions. Edge case: Peter Thiel consumes the blood of children.

Words to live by… Depressingly, I don't think these are words to live by. I think if we say things that mislead people in a way that we could have predicted we are responsible In this case though, it's funy if people think this is real. It's unproblematic to laugh at stupid people, that's my point

Having recently read a bunch of Kirby's New Gods, I've realised one of the things I find most unrelatable about classic comics is the oversold leading stinger. I can roll with your ridiculous story concept. Just don't open by making me read a wall of text about how amazing and unbelievable it is.

Frequently bought together
A ceramic ladel with a cow design, poorly imitating the aesthetic of the old blue-and-white 'willow pattern' ceramicsA machine with a cuboid body and more complex elements on top that look like they handle fluids of some type. It has little wheels on the bottom. The whole thing is painted a bright royal blue that offers a surreal contrast to its otherwise industrial aesthetic
