We saw one yesterday! Moved a kiddie pool with plants in it & accidentally messed up its comfy home underneath. 😭

I sympathize! I’m lucky to work from home two days so I can get outside a little here and there, but on the office days it’s hard knowing it’ll be dark before I get home, when so much needs to be done outside!

No kidding! It’s finally cooled off enough that I can bear going out, but now it gets dark before I can get anything done!

It gets dark so early now, friends!

Ha! I *could* stand in it and pretend to be in the water he pretended was there to complain about… But really I shall wade into a river for training to monitor water quality by means of benthic macroinvertebrates!

These are great pictures! During my winter sowing I was trying to get pictures of each type of seed on some 2 mm grid paper but my camera just will not do this!

Yes! I just planted some this year and it’s already massive and heavy with flowers. Can’t wait for it to spread!

"Eddies," said Ford, "in the space-time continuum." "Ah," nodded Arthur, "is he. Is he." ... (We’re watching the 12 Monkeys tv series and we quote this at least twice per episode on average.)

I know you know this but once you’ve seen totality once you’ll do almost anything to catch those few moments of awe again. & there is absolutely no explaining that to anyone who hasn’t experienced it.

My partner & I vacationed in Asheville in 2017 to see our first. A guy there had driven up from FL & said before it he didn’t know if he’s chase it in 2024. Immediately afterwards we asked if he would, and he said “Oh, absolutely.” We did too, to Ohio that time!

“Stop replying all,” etc. It bogged down the email system so much that anyone not already signed in had their Outlook crash if they tried. They finally took the whole email system offline to stop it. It was honestly one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.

This happened at my job a few years ago! Someone accidentally sent an email to everyone in the university/health system, which I think is about 30,000 people? And for *hours* person after person replied all to say “I think you have the wrong Jennifer,” “Please remove me from replies,”

A closeup of a cat’s white paw resting on a gray sweatshirt, with part of a fluffy offwhite blanket under the cat.

In 2024 we went away for a few days. This was Lola the day after we got home. The fabric in front is my sweatshirt, she’s lying on the arm of the love seat but keeping her paw on me, like if she does that I can’t go away again. 😢
A white cat with patches of orange and gray stripes lies on top of a fluffy offwhite blanket and lays one paw on a gray sweatshirt worn by an otherwise unseen person. Lamplight falls on everything in the picture.

Meanwhile we’re probably 14 inches behind on rain for the year at this point. 😬 It’s grim in our part of Virginia. Loads of rain in the last week but almost all on the other side of the mountains.

This was going to be the year I dug all of the wild lettuce out of my garden. This is not the year I dug all the wild lettuce out. This is the year I have twice as much wild lettuce as last year.

Yeah, our stove is electric but I’d still like to have the hood vented outside rather than back into the kitchen for steam, smells, etc., but I think the duct would have to take too many turns, if it was even possible.

And there was me cooking in my NYC apartment for ten years with no ventilation half the year. 😬 Unless the giant gap under the apartment door counts.

but none of that makes city employees the enemy. They too are working within a system they may not entirely agree with. Those of us who are actually living humans that have to navigate these relationships don’t need you sabotaging them on a public platform. That doesn’t help create change.

Dude, get your AI under control. It is again leaving multiple comments on the same thing unnecessarily. More importantly, I meant what I said. It was a kind email. It wasn’t passive-aggressive. City codes are often outdated & residents may use them as tools to satisfy their petty grievances,

…but also the guy who never clears his sidewalk after snows, while some of us are out clearing our own & neighbors’ too. Don’t know if he doesn’t care that some people can’t afford cars to get around in & need to be able to walk safely or just has never imagined such people exist.

Oh yeah, I mean this is the guy who had broken shutters hanging off the front of his house for a good 6 months. & not because he couldn’t afford to fix it. We didn’t complain because it’s none of our business.

gray, spelled g r a y @grayherndon.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Anyway, at least this time the city knows he was lying.
120
gray, spelled g r a y @grayherndon.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
But then the next time he thinks he can get his way by lying, he does it again, just as comfortably. It’s bizarre. People lie, but they often don’t easily admit it even when caught. And when they do admit it, they don’t usually try it again with the same person. But he just keeps doing it.
120
gray, spelled g r a y @grayherndon.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Which… is a pattern with the man up the street. He lies to us (about whether he took photos of our property, about whether he filed a complaint, about whether he vandalized our property), then when presented with evidence to the contrary, he very comfortably admits he lied.

1. The pond has had no water in it at all for many weeks 2. It has never had water sit in it for longer than 36 hours at a stretch 3. It has never been more than half full. He said, “The initial complaint was for stagnant water and run-off. After I probed further, the complainant retracted.”
120
gray, spelled g r a y @grayherndon.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
But the man from the city mentioned there had also been a complaint about our pond, which they found to be less of a concern. I asked if he could clarify the nature of the complaint, given that:

Got a complaint from the city today (very kindly written, by email rather than certified letter) about our grass being tall, which, sure, and we’re working on it. No problem, & this is the farthest we’ve ever gone through the season before the man up the street complains about *something*…

That’s about what my wait was as well, when they were worried about a GI bleed! And then I get people saying “but if we had universal healthcare we might have to wait for elective procedures!!”

Air quality seems to be good so I think not that! Probably heat? At times there was actually a lovely breeze but I was still pretty drenched when I came in. It’s weird though, all 3 times it’s happened this summer I went out in the AM & didn’t feel it was too hot.

Young slimy salamander (and snail friend) found in northeast Ohio today - Arguably one of the prettiest non-Ambystoma salamanders in North America.
Profile view of the head, upper body and front leg of a slimy salamander. The salamander is facing left. Its body is black, with creamy-white flecks all over. The eyes are big, bulgy and all-black. It is on a brown, rotting log. near the bottom of a frame, a small snail is crawling.

or demanding updates that have already been provided in subsequent comments in a fake folksy conversation, or just missing the point entirely, so I have to think the reviewing isn’t very thorough. In any case, you’ll only get machine interaction out of the comments, not human.

FYI the account you’re conversing with is AI, not a person. They claim a person reviews (and in fairness, what seemed to be a person answered when I sent a direct message with a complaint), but the reviewing isn’t sufficient to stop the AI from posting 5-6 repetitive comments on the same thing,

Plan to restore nature in England by 2030 criticised as ‘completely insufficient’
Critics accuse ministers of failing to take control of nature crisis and leaving it to private landowners to act voluntarily The government’s plan to protect and restore nature in England by 2030 has been condemned as “pathetic” and “completely insufficient” in the face of the spiralling environmental crisis. The long-awaited plan published on Monday calls for landowners to voluntarily opt to protect and enhance nature, rather than creating legal protections for nature across more of the country’s land, critics say.
