On the U.S.-Mexico border human smuggling is a problem, human trafficking a danger, but the transport of fentanyl into the U.S. is a deadly catastrophe. The Shadow Wolves are part of the answer and California Fish & Wildlife Warden Kat Grant will find herself in the middle of it.

I'm researching my second novel, which will take place along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. There are many pieces I haven't yet decided on, so my mood board is in gray scale until I actually start writing. But it keeps me focused and inspired as I work to decide on my story's framework.

From top left clockwise: Chapel near the Mission San Xavier del Bac on the Tohono O’odham reservation; money and drugs; border wall with barbed wire; patch of the Shadow Wolves, Department of Homeland Security’s only Native American tracking unit specifically utilized for targeted interdiction operations; the track of a foot; an image of the main character, California Fish & Wildlife K-9 Warden, Kat Grant.

When I say I'm a "cutter" many won't know what that means. You ride your horse into a small herd of cows and "cut" one out. Cows want to get back to the herd. It's your horses job to keep that from happening, without you using your reins to guide him. I'm just a beginner, but here's a pick of me.

At a club cutting in Yuma, Arizona, riding "Jesse."
