There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

the implication of "this looks like america", even if it's true, it's that this is business as usual. there is nothing wrong with comparing one fascist leader to another.

because removing any points of comparison is bad for social understanding. it's the same reason conservatives want to remove academic language. people make comparisons because they'd otherwise be bad at recognizing the profile of the moment they're living in

but it's all overshadowed by leda being the best protagonist in the series and having a more diverse roster than ever before. for (afaik) the first time in fire emblem, "who's your favorite black character" is a legitimate question and not a joke

i think all this dissonance between the core gameplay and lower-stakes stuff is what makes me really feel it when the game switches gears. old fire emblem games just had everyone speak in portraits, but it felt fine because the game didn't switch to 3rd person and make you run around and feed people

i think the characters look great. they look exactly like their portraits. but they're constantly standing in a big empty room and talking, a minute before doing combat animations so sick i'd say they finally match the quality of the GBA games

the world graphics are much more refined than they've ever been, and they still look... wrong to me. and i don't mean in a fidelity way. like i'm sorry to nitpick because it's not *bad*, but these cel-shaded anime characters live in a world that feels incongruous to me

the scenario presentation is so goddamn cheap, sometimes cheap in a funny way, but it gets away with it by having a compelling story and characters. we're talking like, sub-Pokemon Sword level cutscenes here. it's understandable because it's such a huge story, and you can tell where the effort went.

this game is kind of incredible. it's some of the best raw fire emblem i've ever played, but it's very much a sequel to three houses in that it's absolutely full of sawdust. but better-tasting sawdust than three houses. i really wish so much of the roster-building wasn't brainless mobile game tasks.
