A first-grade teacher had just been shot. Sixteen children fled her classroom. In newly unsealed body-camera video, the 6-year-old who fired the gun is heard cursing at the school employee holding him and at the officers who arrive. The footage shows the aftermath of the January 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. Teacher Abigail Zwerner was struck in the hand and chest. Reading specialist Amy Kovac held the boy in the classroom and called 911. The boy told officers he had taken the gun from his mother, according to The Virginian-Pilot.His mother, Deja Taylor, was sentenced to two years in state prison for felony child neglect and 21 months in federal prison on firearm-related charges. The boy, now 9 or 10, lives in Newport News under the care of his great-grandfather, Calvin Taylor, and attends a different school.Zwerner survived, but the bullet narrowly missed her heart and remains in her chest. She has undergone multiple surgeries and no longer teaches at Richneck. In 2025, a jury awarded her $10 million in a civil case against the school’s former assistant principal, finding her liable after staff had repeatedly warned that the boy might have a gun.View all 5,017 comments
