Someone just reblogged this on tumblr with this tag and I just fucking died I've been on this shit for over a decade and it's only getting worse

written about this before but whatever.

Videogames as an artform have a problem with nostalgia. Not that people shouldn’t have nostalgia. Or that games shouldn’t draw from the past. But instead the weight we give to nostalgia.

When people go back to enjoy old games, we assume it’s a nostalgia thing. Do people assume that with books? Or movies? Or music? People certainly do go back in time with those mediums for nostalgia! It happens! I know when my sister is listening to certain cheesy old boyband pop or punk she’s often having a musical nostalgia trip! That’s cool! But we still don’t ASSUME, CONSTANTLY thats why people go back to stuff.

People like old stuff because it’s cool and interesting. It’s historic. People go watch Metropolis still, but how many people alive could even be nostalgic for a movie like that?

I almost want to see the word Nostalgia excised from discussions about video games – not because nostalgia is bad but because we over use it to the point where it’s actually harmful I think.

I mean I made IWBTG and am making an NES style game right now and even for me, the obsession with ‘nostalgia’ seems crazy.

Old stuff is cool. I know this because I see a lot of you kids on my tumblr feed talking about games I know you didn’t grow up with. It’s like finding your parents record or CD collection. Thinking the primary greatness of old games is bringing back memories of eating cereal and playing games on a saturday morning is a great injustice, even if those memories for some are perfectly worthwhile things.

seems like a good cheap option to read back catalogs but why the hell would you pick Superior Spider-Man to represent Spidey lmao

When I'm feeling good you can reasonably assume I'm working on 5 things at once none of which have any relation to each other.

This video has gotten a surprising amount of views (even accounting for 'engaged views'). Raising my editing standards and actually uploading videos works out eventually lol.

Due to some limitations with the model, it ended up looking the best to do a forced perspective.

Here's the full animation I did for Garrett this time. It was my first time compositing an animation over already recorded footage, but I think it turned out pretty good.

Man I always knew Erik Larsen had weird takes but I never expected him to slip into outright sexism as he did in the ASM#1000 Letters page. Like he says some interesting stuff once but I can't imagine what possesses a person to say this, and also for Nick Lowe to publish and platform this.

ASM#1000. Interview with Creator Section.

Amazing Spider-Man #1000 main story was pretty weak. The backups are mostly fine but I don't recommend buying this.

Now the games one was easier! I played some stuff pretty religiously and it's funny to think about how much like KH and Twilight Princess especially kinda shaped my taste in huge ways.

In retrospect I should've done all 3 lol The manga one was harder cause I didn't read a ton of manga growing up tbh. So this is a mix of stuff I read in high school that stuck with me and things I consider really fundamental to me and my tastes now.

Saw people were doing these anime that made you 3x3's so I aimed for the stuff that got me back into anime as a broader medium back in high school, cause I consider these the big springboards for my tastes now tbh
