This acoustically reproducing 30s portable has a uniquely mains and spring powered motor. Subsequently sold under the name “Dual,” this German hybrid motor became such a success that the company rebranded itself to the motor’s name. Dual would become a global player in postwar Hi-Fi turntables.

In these trying times, do as those who came before us did: keep spinning and appreciate the tune.

An early 1930s UK Columbia 202 Viva-Tonal Grafonola. The 202 was the top of Columbia’s mid tier gramophone offerings. Utilizing designs dated prior to the EMI merger with rival HMV, this model evolved through the 30s gradually incorporating HMV components until its retirement just before WWII.
A red Rexine covered Columbia 202 portable gramophone with its oft missing in-lid record storage binder. This model was popular worldwide thanks to the six continent reach of Columbia Graphophone Ltd (London), well established prior to the incorporation of EMI.

This still from “Bringing Up Baby” (1938) shows Baby enjoying a record player, which electric phonographs were beginning to be called to distinguish their new technology from the decades old acoustic horn players. (cont.)

On this day 88 years ago, Robert Johnson was finishing his first recording session (he only managed two). Between Nov 23 and 25, 1936, in room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, he laid down 16 tunes, inc Terraplane Blues and Cross Road Blues. Rock n roll was born, history was made.

One of the most famous portable gramophones, this model 2 Decca is in the IWM. A clipping from the US talking machine trades describes its service in the tranches. For this reason many reflector bowl horn gramophones are erroneously thought of as “trench gramophones,” Decca marque or not.
Battle scarred Decca model 2 portable from WWI via the Imperial War Museum (UK)a clipping from from “Talking Machine World” (US) describing the Decca gramophone donated to the IWM in 1918.

Columbia N. 900 fonograf Italy 1939 During WW2, EMI divisions in Axis occupied territories were isolated from the UK. Many would improvise their seasonal offerings by augmenting pre-embargo stock with designs and parts from local gramophone companies using imported parts from neutral Switzerland.
