Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 7hWhever I investigate a journal, I am always interested by any claimed impact factor. Often, the journal just states an impact factor but provides no information about how the impact factor is derived (that is a major red flag). 🧵 100

Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Again, I am not saying that Metaverse is predatory, but I am unsure why they are using an Omniscient domain for some of the communication. It just causes (at best) confusion and (at worst) concerns about what the journal/publisher is up to. What is your view? Am I looking too closely for red flags? 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/20264️⃣ The journal URL [Image 2] is aber.apasciom 5️⃣ Nova has a phone number of +60 (Malaysia), rather than Singapore. Nothing wrong with that (the two countries are next to each other) but it does make you look twice. 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/20263️⃣ Nova signs off using an omniscient.sg email address [Image 2]. Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I am not saying that this journal is predatory but I noted a few things that would raise red flags for me and would suggest that further investigation would be in order. 100

Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026But this list has to be treated with caution, as it is subject to Goodhart's Law ("When a metric becomes a target it is no longer a good metric"). 110
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Lots of people are saying that they are in the Stanford/Elsevier top 2% list. Which is great, if you are there legitimately (which I feel that the majority of people are). 🧵 210

Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Do some journals show very different patterns from comparable journals? The final author list tells us who ended up on the paper. Perhaps we should also be able to see how that list came to be. Would you support a public authorship trail? 210
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026There could also be a wider benefit. If publishers recorded these changes consistently, we could begin analysing authorship changes across thousands of papers. How often are authors added late? Are changes more common in some disciplines? 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026This would not mean that authorship changes were automatically suspicious. In fact, greater transparency could help demonstrate that a change was entirely legitimate, properly explained and agreed by those involved. 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Perhaps published papers should therefore contain a simple authorship trail showing who was listed at initial submission, who was added or removed during revision, when the change happened, why it happened and whether the relevant authors approved it. 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026If a paragraph changes, readers probably do not need to know exactly when or why. But if an author is added or removed, something more fundamental has changed: the people receiving credit for the research, and potentially those accepting responsibility for it, are no longer the same. 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026There may be perfectly legitimate reasons for all of these changes, but should readers be able to see them? In this week's Publishing with Integrity, I argued that authorship may deserve greater transparency than other changes made to a manuscript during peer review. 110
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 10/10/2026We usually see the final author list on a published paper. But what if that was not the author list when the paper was first submitted? An author might have been added during revision, someone might have been removed, or the order might have changed. 🧵 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Essentially, the UK is seeing a decline, year-on-year in visa applications. This is one of the reasons for some of the issues that UK HE is currently facing. Of course, this is a complex issue and this is just one data point. Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 09/10/2026I don't usually comment on things like student visas but these figures in a Times Higher Education article by Jack Grove struck me. 🧵 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The answer might reveal rather more about an institution’s true capacity than its budgets, organisational charts or strategic plans. I explored this issue more fully in this week’s Governance, Leadership & Research newsletter: How much of your university runs on goodwill? buff.ly/hligHYV 020
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Perhaps universities should occasionally undertake a simple stress test. Imagine that, tomorrow, everybody did their job well, but did only what they were formally expected and resourced to do. What would stop working? 130
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026At that point, goodwill has effectively become part of the operating model. And that creates an interesting governance question: If an activity only works because people routinely contribute more time than the institution has actually resourced, is that activity genuinely sustainable? 121
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026A new initiative may appear affordable because nobody includes the evenings, weekends and additional responsibilities absorbed by existing staff. A programme may look adequately resourced because the people delivering it repeatedly do more than they are formally allocated to do. 120
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The problem begins when the institution quietly starts planning on the assumption that this extra effort will continue. 120
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026People review papers, mentor colleagues, examine PhDs, sit on committees, help students, contribute to professional bodies and take on countless other activities that may never appear in a workload model. Often, those activities benefit both the individual and the university. 120
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 08/10/2026One thought has stayed with me since writing this week’s newsletter: At what point does goodwill stop being goodwill? There is nothing wrong with people doing more than their formal role requires. In universities, much of academic life depends on precisely that spirit of collegiality. 120

Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 05/10/2026In an era where AI will increasingly influence higher education, effective AI governance may become one of the most important areas that a university should consider. 000
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 05/10/2026The presentation will conclude by suggesting that we not ask what AI can do. Rather, we ask what values universities wish to protect, what outcomes they seek to achieve, and what responsibilities they owe to students, staff and society. 100
Graham Kendall @grahamkendall.bsky.social · 05/10/2026It will also consider some of the risks associated with poorly governed AI systems, including bias, erosion of academic standards and the unintended consequences of metric-driven behaviour. 100
