It may be the 3rd in a trilogy, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's finished ... 😉

NEW on the SCM Press blog: Graham Adams writes about discerning the spirit(s) in the stories that shape us scmpress.hymnsam.co.uk/blog/discern... @grahamadams.bsky.social

Title: Discerning the spirit(s) in the stories that shape us
Subtitle: Graham Adams considers what (or who) helps us in times of crisis.

Text of blogpost:
We live in a time of crisis. Perhaps we always do. But the various crises feel intense – and interlocked; a coalition of crises, gnawing at us and our sanity and our sense of hope. The economy stumbles while serving the interests of billionaires – and billions struggle to survive. The democratic systems, which are supposed to make things better, seem stuck, ill-equipped, unable to address a fast-paced world of slow/no progress. The environment is choking, its ecosystems splintered and wounded and groaning. The crisis is a polycrisis. And it’s overwhelming. Hope is hard work.

Part of what makes it so intense is the cacophony of stories, such diverse narratives competing for our attention and allegiance; the different accounts of why these crises are so real. To whom should we listen? Which algorithm commands our attention? Which echo chamber resonates best with us? And who are ‘we’ anyway?

Churches are well versed in stories. But that doesn’t mean we always know how best to adjudicate between the different accounts appealing for our attention. After all, our own tradition is a mix of stories, a range of interpretations and insights, some in stark contrast to each other. To whom should we listen? Which biblical algorithm commands our attention?

Religion is rightly a struggle between two impulses - the breaker represents the need for containment, to keep things orderly, though positioned by people while others lose out, and the gentle persistent power of the tide, moving things on, grain by grain, subverting human power #theanarchicspirit

A privilege to contribute to this, in honour of Jione Havea. In fact, it occurs to me that a good question to ask ourselves, when thinking about decolonial scholarship or practice, is "What would Jione do?" He was a mentor and inspirer for so many.

Huge sadness because of the sudden death of Jione Havea, brilliant biblical scholar, mischievous inspiration and decolonial troublemaker, who had kindly provided a playful Foreword for The Anarchic Spirit (which he epitomises, in many ways). A massive impact on so many

It's that time in the lectionary calendar when one of my worship ideas in Holy Anarchy is relevant! See the Appendix: the missing city & hidden empire - for January 25th. It's about how Sepphoris was written out, & how empires become hidden. To what do we give our loyalty?

Lk 13:35: pharisees warn Jesus to go as Herod is out to kill him. 1) Rulers don't threaten you for saying 'all lives matter' - they want you dead for taking sides with their victims. Jesus was political & partisan. 2) We're used to antagonism with pharisees but here they're allies. Don't box ppl in

Jesus embraced female imagery (mother hen), but this shouldn't be mistaken for cuddly-ness, because he called out (i.e. judged) 'foxes' - those who would harm 'the little'; it's politics against Strong Men (misogyny, bullying, abuse, non-empathy), advocating safety for all - a timely vision
