It's far right, arch conservative bullshit imported from the Christian Right in the US. It's empty, moralising nonsense, and pretty wrong-headed in terms of voter support, because I'd be surprised if Reform voters don't include at least a representative number of single or unmarried parents.

I remember being infuriated by that outcome at time. It felt like such a huge waste, and damaging to the left as a movement. See Your Party as well.

I remember it happening and having a lot of doubts about its longevity. If I remember right, it didn't have a clear, positive proposal to make - more opposition to the status quo. Which is fine to engage people for a while, but doesn't tend to be sustainable.

Agreed. But I've learned the hard way that many people still, fundamentally, don't understand and can't relate to that experience, and it shows in how they respond to the disruptions these conditions cause. 50+ per cent of the labour of mental illness is anticipating its effects in day-to-day life.

I don't know what to do with this kind of question. I've seen a huge amount of coverage of Farage's lies and dubious claims and financial scandals. Not from the Telegraph or the Mail, who back Reform, but elsewhere. Does it make any sense to refer to "the media" as a monolith in this way?
010
Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
What a bizarre, oppositional conclusion to reach. Describing how something functions in reality is not an endorsement. I'm saying that I think this issue is more complicated than simply blaming racist journalists, and that simply blaming racist journalists will not address the problem.

Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
We're talking about the Arday case. I'm disagreeing with the claim that newspapers would publish these pieces (and especially keep on publishing them) if they didn't drive engagement. I don't see any evidence that the Arday stories were published in order to show up on Newsnight or Today.
000
Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I'm not sure it's that simple. I imagine some editors and journalists made a conscious, enthusiastic choice to go after Arday. I imagine others instead felt pressured to do so because of the pressure to drive reader numbers / engagements. I imagine others were instructed to write the stories.

That is ridiculous - I totally agree. The scale and tone of a lot of the coverage was unjustified, bad faith, and deeply racist. And I think that the structure of our media industry - based on clicks, endless analysis, rapidity, hot takes, scarce resources, financial instability - also contributed.

Banksy has been around for decades; why is he now suddenly a harbinger of the apocalypse?
110
Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I agree that a significant amount of the news coverage of the Arday case was malicious and racist. But a certain amount was not, and some was *about the news coverage itself*. That cycle of real and manufactured outrage all drove reader engagement, and it all contributed to the harmful media circus.
100
Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
News media relies on advertising, which relies on clicks. Articles with more engagement attract more advertising. At the same time, many news outlets are under-resourced and struggling financially, and losing readers to social media. Did you read any of the stories about Arday? How many?
300
Graeme McGregor @graememcgregor.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
How do we distinguish malicious journalists and editors from those who were taking a more neutral approach to the story? I'm seeing a lot of blanket condemnation of "the media", but little nuance about the role of readers, of clicks and engagement, and of the business model of modern news media.
