“Heaven sent were the swallows,” the children repeated. That phrase had replaced “God Bless America” very quickly. Such is the power of propaganda. That’s why I’d set the stage here. They could see the underground waterfall. They were seated on cushions where survivors had pitched tents to escape a government hell-bent on making them lab rats. We were back where the horrors began to ensure they were never repeated.

“When I was your age, no one ever expected me to be a leader of the free world. I had a nickname then. It was Mayhem Maker.”

This wasn’t the prepared introduction to my speech. But, I could see, even half-blind, the faces of the school children brightening. So, I added, “And, it was well-deserved.” There were audible snickers throughout the crowd and I relaxed. I’m sure my advisors were having a conniption. Trying to keep me on-script is a full-time job and not often a successful one.

However, this wasn’t just a speech. This was a rallying cry. One day, if I survive the next assassination attempt, I might have to send these children to war abroad. If we don’t stop the mutations of the virus, it will inevitably come back to our shores by migrating humans or even the birds. We have to stop the isolationists.
