All I'm doing is trying to write a short paragraph on each author, but yeah, the rest of my head is like "BOOK BOOK TRANSLATION TEACHING ARTICLE BOOK ABSTRACT BOOK." (When you try to do public intellectual stuff but are too exhausted from your actual work. 🫠)

Reading crip/disability/mad studies work almost everyday lately for my book project, and I wish more queer & feminist studies scholars and activists would read it too. Ableism in our communities is too common and completely normalized sometimes. “Care” shouldn’t just be a nice academic keyword.

I'm looking for friendly exchanges, inspiration, collaboration, interviews, etc. I've chatted w/journalists for CNN, SCMP, TIME, The China Project, RTHK tv/radio and love to share my research/expertise. I'm also on IG + Threads (latter posting only in Chinese). Thanks! Please poke me, add me, etc.

Hi, I might try this out for real... I'm a queer feminist studies scholar who works on Japanese women writers & girls' culture (manga! cuteness!); transnational Asian contexts via Jp-, Ch-, Eng-lang flows of theories + activisms; and crip/disability, mad, neurodiversity studies. I have opinions. 🙌

Quoted briefly on cute culture in Hong Kong. As usual, what I actually said was a lot more complex (but they cited me very specifically on the Hong Kong context, which I'm not really an expert on - yet!). www.scmp.com/postmag/cult...

The 2nd-generation 外省人 plight of having political beliefs that are totally different from your family’s, and trying to ignore them politely since you know elderly Taiwanese will never listen to your opinion. 🤦‍♀️ I wonder how this compares to generation gaps in HK concerning politics.

As someone with experience with mental illness, I only recently grasped how unwilling most ppl are to deal with anyone who doesn’t only have mild depression or anxiety. I’m sad to say I honestly don’t think most ppl understand what it means to criminalize mental illness & most ppl do not care.

On Threads I say things but am held back slightly by every effort to write in Chinese. Before I went slightly viral on Twitter by ranting about diff issues, but that’s not my kind of negativity these days. 🤔 Social media affect is hard to manage.

Seeing what Trump is doing everyday, the need for anger isn’t what’s first on my mind—I hope queers, feminists, all marginalized ppl can do their utmost to learn how to truly enact love & care. That is the real starting point for resistance & liberation.

This is a dilemma for me because many who identify as non-binary are cis-passing. I simply don’t believe they/we should take up as much space. But right now, what is better in terms of solidarity? What are the politics & ethical dilemmas of how we identify & use our identities? (3/3)
020
👉Would that mean standing by trans ppl to fight harder in solidarity? 👉Would it mean jumping on board to take up more space & frame myself as a “victim” and extra marginalized in this moment when I’m not? It’s tempting, isn’t it, to find an easy path to getting sympathy. And toxic as f*ck. (2/3)

Apropos of nothing, I’ve been thinking for a long time about what non-binary identity means to me, now even more since the attack on trans rights with the new US administration. If I openly identify as non-binary, whether or not I actively change my gender presentation, what would that mean? (1/3)

I research Japanese lit, but many writers are uncertain about LGBT+ issues, & some are transphobic. This is the case with writers in any language, but I wish I knew how to patiently, effectively help teach them. Despite my Yale PhD, I don’t know how many would trust me enough to be my students. 😅

Aren’t journalists supposed to write about the truth? Aren’t they supposed to give voices to the voiceless? This sounds naive, but in HK I still mourn many things and dream about more journalism, that tries to do more. If you’re this kind of journalist, I want to know you.

I was also told: No complex narratives are allowed. Such as talking about how East Asian feminist movements are plagued with transphobia and other violence. Transphobia is AWFUL now in Taiwan, but who wants to write this story? It’s too confusing when Taiwan is held up as a bastion of human rights.

Was talking to a friend who said she was sad that LGBTQ in Western countries don’t seem to care about what’s happening in East Asia. There’s no desire to know or report in more mainstream media on what ppl here are dealing with. There’s a lack of solidarity.

#4B If journalists want to interview me on why I'm troubled by 4B: I'm a scholar w/a Yale PhD specializing in transnational Asian queer/feminist issues. I'm fluent in Japanese, Chinese, & studied Korean; I've lived in Asia for years (Japan, HK, Taiwan).
052
I vaguely get the sense (trying not to read triggering material) there are a few journalists who have written decent pieces on this by now, plus other scholars speaking up. But this is my longer take on #4B and why I find it terrible to see any US feminists (whether white, Asian/POC) supporting it.
010
But it's clearly enough that it stresses the crap out of me. Please let's just not legitimatize feminism that has so often gone horribly wrong & hurt ppl in East Asia. And it's 100% disrespectful/arrogant to say, "Well, as US feminists we'll do it perfectly, so who give a f*ck."
010
From my perspective, it's not just about a niche Korean feminism, it's about hundreds of new/budding Chinese feminists inspired by ideas from 4B and often following them to be transphobic, homophobic, misandric, & exclusionary towards women not adhering to 4B. It's NOT all PRC feminists...
140
Which is to say, for me as a Taiwanese American based in HK who's come into contact with PRC students & feminists, I worry greatly when I see ANY public support of extremist feminist positions, esp. since there are so many Ch feminists around the world &/or newly coming to know feminism right now.
110
- Some Ch feminists (incl. queer ones such as cis lesbians/non-binary) say they're trans-friendly but only see TERFs as "another branch of feminism" & don't call them out. - There is genuine misandry on the Ch internet - I heard some feminists celebrated when seeing news of a young boy dying.
110
For example: - PRC feminist inspiration from 4B = women married to men are often treated with hostility for supporting the patriarchy - There is a lot of transphobia in Ch feminism, as is the case among feminists around the world. Some claim not to be transphobic but want "pure female-only" spaces.
120
There are Chinese feminists who are hardworking, brave, and deserve all our respect. But basically feminist ideas have erupted over the past decade or so, and many Ch feminist activists debate all kinds of questions that came up during the 2nd wave in the US. Some go down a reeeeally bad path.
110
Also, this extreme branch of Korean feminism is known for being highly transphobic, as well as homophobic. There is no sense of "queer solidarity" since many members discriminated against/excluded non-cis-women. Furthermore, these kinds of ideas have been very influential among PRC feminists.
110
But it's widely recognized that Megalia/Womad encourage actual misandry (hatred of men); this is ultimately not a queer/genuinely radical view since queer/feminist studies teaches us to recognize how individuals are embedded within systemic violence. It is not okay to simply hate/blame all men.
110
An example of an academic article to check out: Youngmi Kim wrote on Megalia & "digital populism" in "Mirroring Misogyny in Hell Chosǒn." One consideration is that such tactics are very accessible for women new to feminism to help them recognize recognizing discrimination against women.
110
Hi, thanks. I'm overwhelmed w/deadlines now so won't dig out many sources for now. But Korean studies scholars have cautioned "mirroring" tactics used by Megalia/similar feminists (reversing misogynistic statements to use against men) are limited in their ability to bring genuine positive change.
