Big thanks to @cowboyjamboree.bsky.social and @vanwinkle.bsky.social for including my work in this anthology! It's surreal to hold my work in a published volume like this. One copy has a place of honor on my shelf and the other now resides at my local public library.

Dark academia x DIY punk Determined to have one last great summer after graduation, best friends Kat and Molly must navigate toxic men and the systems that protect them, small town secrets, and the Appalachian gutter punk scene without losing themselves, or each other. #QuestPit #Q #A #LF
On a pale floral background, surrounded by line drawings of flowers and mushrooms, text reads ‘An agent’s guide to This Used To Be Home by Grace E. Ludlow! 94,000 words contemporary literary fiction’. Below on a stained napkin reads ‘Best friends Kat and Molly look forward to one last summer together in their small college town before going their separate ways. Kat works at the town diner and ponders her future while Molly accepts an exclusive internship with a top entomology professor- an opportunity that can kick start her grad school experience. However, when a mysterious man whose handsome face hides a checkered past takes the open line cook position at the diner, the girls’ lives are irrevocably changed. Seduced by his carefree gutter punk lifestyle, the girls must navigate toxic men and the systems that protect them, redefining their identities post-college, and their own complicated relationship to make it through the summer without losing themselves or each other’.
On a white background, a tan piece of paper holds a text block which reads “The town of Charlesburg, Virginia died in the summers.
Well, not really, but like most other towns centered around a major university, about three quarters of the population did leave after graduation weekend. May lay heavy on the town like frosting on a cinnamon roll, the syrupy-sweet heat melting into the valley and running through the streets. The buses, typically so punctual during the semester, ran a limited schedule, leaving Katlyn Fredricks to walk the half mile from the apartment she shared with her roommate Molly to her job at the town’s diner.
It wasn’t too bad, at least if she worked the opening shift. Setting out before six meant she avoided the heat of the sun, amplified by the weighty humidity of southern Virginia. Even in the early morning hours, it curled around Katlyn with sticky fingers, causing her uniform shirt to cling to her skin.
She kicked at a rock on the sidewalk, scrolling through the music downloaded to her phone. Her fingertips caught on the crack that ran through the screen as she selected a song to help her wake up a bit, at least until she could grab a cup of coffee. The sun crested over the blue mist of the mountains that cupped the town like a set of hands, the cicadas quieting from their nighttime serenade. If only she had the time to appreciate her surroundings more, go for a hike or take a lazy day floating on the river like a typical college-aged kid. Unfortunately, the gavel of rent hung over her head, so work took precedence.” The page is titled ‘first page’ and the text is surrounded by a scientific drawing of a butterfly, a few silver studs, a receipt, a ticket, a few colorful leaves, safety pins, and a butterfly-shaped enamel pin.
On a green fern-printed background are four book covers. The page is titled ‘comps’. The first book is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, along with a note that says ‘Appalachian setting’. The second is Nana by Ai Yazawa with a note that says ‘Homoerotic roommates + punk culture’. The third is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo with a note that says ‘Bisexual friends to lovers’. The last is for the Amazon original Fleabag with a note that says ‘Messy 20-somethings with bad taste in men’. Also in the image are cutouts from a guide about butterflies, some graffiti, studs and safety pins, a dried rose, and a brass pin shaped like a dragonfly.
A cassette tape case sits in the center of the page with words written on the back insert. It reads “ Trope playlist- friends to lovers, love triangle (that’s actually a triangle!), own voices Queer/Neurodiverse rep, open door romance, small town secrets, manic pixie rat man, dark academia x DIY punk, breaking the cycle, coming of age”. At the top left corner is a QR code with a note saying ‘Listen to the Playlist!”. Behind the tape is dark paper with a star pattern. At the bottom left is a pack of cigarettes as well as a cigarette beside it and two safety pins. The bottom right is an illustration of a bee landing on a flower. The top right has a white graduation tassel as well as another bee illustration. At the top center is another image of a butterfly.

In the first draft, I had a dream sequence that I subsequently cut and then much later added back in a totally different spot. Here's a snippet!
Molly’s world had grown to the size of giants.
Rather, she seemed to have shrunk. Standing up, she turned her hands over, examining her limbs with fascination. Stacks of books cluttered the surface of the wooden table she stood on, the gaps between like narrow canyons made of striations of paper and leather. She traversed the open pages of a notebook, the looping handwritten letters as big as her bare feet. Heel to toe, she balanced along the printed lines of the page like a balance beam, her arms outstretched.

Possibly my last regular visit to my favourite writing spot and they have a new fancy drink on the menu- an Ube basil tea latte. Crazy it's almost been a year.

Just a wee snippet from Run, Baby, Run, my current MaeMir WIP that I'll hopefully finish the second half of soon #RenewTheAcolyte #AcolyteSummer
This was a challenge, a competition. If she could get away, she won. She’d have a new victory to hold over Qimir’s head, always a treat, and if she lost…
If she lost she still won.

A surprisingly painful reality of losing continuance of my job is that I probably won't be able to frequent the bar/coffee shop I've patronized through the writing of my book the same way as I've been. So many words written here, so many London fogs, I'll miss it dearly

Finally actually writing out this fun lil spooky maemir one shot I've been sitting on. It's been hard to write recently given *gestures broadly at everything* but still we soldier on. Smut waits for nobody and nothing

A lot of my story has references to folk punk songs, such as this line which is in reference to the Days n Daze song Crustfall open.spotify.com/track/4AdjQ1... which on its own is a reference to the Rising Sun Armchair and associated Ben Franklin quote
Text- The first was a dark filtered image of a man perched on a freight train car, his profile sharply framed by the rising sun behind him. Or was it setting? Either way, the shot was practically professional in quality.

Library conference for work today, picked up this neat pin. Remember- Libraries are essential in the defence against fascism, that's why they want us gone. Call your lawmakers and donate to support! Or just get a card, it's free!

I think this interaction really sets the tone for where Kat And Molly start off
Text "A flick of her wrist completed the towering spiral of whipped cream atop Molly’s drink and Kat slid the mug across the counter. Her friend’s pale blue eyes lit up as she grabbed it with both hands. Immediately, she slurped up most of the topping, a smear of white festooning the pert upturn of her nose. The corner of Kat’s mouth turned up.
“You got a little shmutz…” she leaned over, attacking the whipped cream with a napkin from her apron pocket.
“Hey!” Molly flailed her arms in front of her, leaning back as far as she could before teetering on the stool. She snatched the napkin from Kat’s fingers and turned to wipe at her face, glaring at her friend.
“All better, Mom?” she pouted."

Notebook rant time- I was a moleskine purist for close to a decade but recently switched to leuchtturm bc the paper quality was going down. Need a new notebook and I cannot find a black, lined, hardcover leuchtturm so I'm gonna have to use dotted for the foreseeable future. A minor problem but ugh
