‘The Barrel Children’ a poem in Roots and Roti, an inspiring novel by Kat François. A Black boy learns from a loving Grenadian grandmother the legacy of the Windrush generation and the Caribbean community. For 11 yrs up, purchase here: www.georgepadmoreinstitute.org/shop?*=Roots...
The Barrel Children

Large brown barrels
as tall as a ten-year-old child
sit in the corner of West Indian living rooms
they become so familiar
they could be another family member.

Slowly they are filled with
rice and pasta, baked beans
tuna and sardines
slowly they are filled up with clothes
and cloth and shoes and books.
Finally,
when the barrel’s appetite is satisfied
the barrel is sealed tight and sent by sea
from Britain all the way to the West Indies.

Back to the grandparents
back to uncles and aunts
back to the ones raising the
left behind children
