2026 Municipal elections: what do mayoral candidates have to say about biking in Ottawa?
* We’ve received a late answer from Jeff Leiper, which we’ve added to the published data below. Nonetheless our point regarding the previous election still stands. With advance voting underway, it …

And on a bad day there was light rail that would take a folding bike. The mix of small e-wheels and transit is good for everyone. Let's do more.

oh and 20 years ago I had Myaesthenia Gravis. I was lucky, I could ride a bike the two miles across town ok. Sit on the train for the ride home. but later the journey turned to 5-6 miles, so I added a motor to the folder, thanks to Mr Motorvator.

You will be amazed by all the small electric vehicles I see using existing bike lanes. There are 3 ladies regularly blast down my street in electric wheel chairs. Pretty sure none of them drive a car.

Monday morning outside Rotterdam Centraal, thousands of cyclists stream toward the station in a carefully choreographed flow. What you’re seeing is the power of systems thinking—the bicycle and train both succeed because they work together seamlessly, where each mode extends the reach of the other.

Greater speed comes from the fact everybody isn't sitting in traffic.

No. Longer links, faster larger capacity. Shorter local bus/shuttle Last half mile walk, e-bikes, scooters. Simple autonomous vehicles, low speed would be a great solution.

The only reason transit is slower is we allocate a tiny fraction of the resources (space and money) that we allocate to cars. The horrible inefficiency of a car centred society is extremely profitable for car manufacturers and related industries.
160
gotu @gotu.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Resources too. All those cars sit idle 95% of the time. Walk around cities and you can always see a million dollars of cars sitting idle. But we can't afford good transit.

I got a response to my Freedom of Information request regarding the LRT upload: There were no communications between the OCTranspo head, the mayor, the city manager or Metrolinx re the upload from March 1st to 26 September 2026. There is no $4 billion deal with the province.

Indeed. See also the dramatic impact cities like Paris have had on congestion, air quality and general quality of life by encouraging active transport. It is also cheap to implement and dramatically reduces road maintenance costs. You would Mr fiscal responsibility would be all for it.

And he's also going to use development charges to fund the plan. But he just celebrated cutting those charges to get more housing built. His plan relies on the feds and province making up the difference. Even before the cuts the charges were insufficient. The math isn't mathing.

gotu @gotu.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Why increase taxes when he can mortgage our future? Once again the $4 billion of LRT debt he's hoping to move to the Province is a key part of the plan. But he's already said he will use those savings to fund transit. The math just does not work.

“Invest in infrastructure that reduces congestion.” Sutcliffe’s campaign says the plan would focus on new roads, widening existing arteries and adding new traffic signals and roundabouts. @mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social does not understand induced demand. Long term it will increase congestion.

Paris has been praised in recent years for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they don’t get enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything they’ve been doing is common sense. They’re moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air and cooling the city.

The ancient Greeks also used to pick representatives by drawing lots. We would get much more representative government if we just picked people at random from the electoral roll.

Long overdue to let people register in the weeks before the magic day and just draw lots on the day to find the lucky winners. End the hunger games, which just favour those with the time to play.

The LRT is an asset, despite its woes. Which raises the question, why didn't the council spend the few million needed to run it every 5 minutes when down town was hurting post COVID and tourists were visiting Ottawa instead of going to the US?

Proportional Representation systems such as Ireland's single transferable vote have been shown to result in more collaboration across party lines. The US system with 2 parties and primaries just creates polarisation and the current mess.

Your budget has a giant hole in it. Your funding of OCTranspo relies on a $4 billion deal to upload the LRT to the province that hasn't got past the exploratory talks phase. So what are you planning on cutting to keep the tax increase so low?

Your financial plan makes no sense. For starters, there's a huge hole in your transit plan: you do not have an agreement to upload the LRT. The Director of OCTranspo said so today. None of your plans are believable.

The savings @mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social is relying on won't kick in until the deal is finalized He's promised to raise taxes by just 2.5%, so there is no way he will be able to fund OCTranspo as he is promising. He is a fraud.
