On September 3, trackers reported a respiratory outbreak among several mountain gorillas of Oruzogo group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. The next day, Dr. Nelson conducted a monitoring visit on the group to assess the symptoms of the affected gorillas.

Dr. Ricky recently visited Mucunguzi group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda for a routine health check of the 20-member mountain gorilla family. Throughout the visit, all members of the group were bright, alert, and exhibiting normal behaviors.

Today, Rwanda celebrates its 21st Kwita Izina — the annual naming ceremony for mountain gorilla infants and a tribute to the country's long-standing conservation efforts. This year, 24 infants born in Volcanoes National Park over the past year are being named.

Drs. Fred + Gloria recently rescued an infant gorilla with a snare wrapped around her arm. Only 4 years old, this was the 2nd time we've intervened to save her. En route to Busingye group in Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Drs. Ricky + John slipped ~30 meters down a steep slope; fortunately, they were OK! They assessed 5 adult females + silverback Mutatine, who were all showing signs of GI parasites. They will be treated + continue to be closely monitored.

Dr. Ricky checked on silverback Muyambi as part of continued monitoring for his recovery after undergoing surgery last month. Drs. Nelson and Gloria had surgically repaired his lip after Muyambi sustained a serious injury that could have impaired his ability to eat and was high risk for infection.

Myrianthus, an infant mountain gorilla in Christmas group, was reported with a suspected left arm fracture. Dr. Fred, accompanied by project vets Drs. Gloria and John, entered Bwindi Impenetrable NP to check on her. The infant’s left arm was swollen with a small necrotic wound at the elbow joint.

Apart from female Aronda who is currently being treated for GI parasites, the other 19 gorillas of the group were in good visual health. Aronda will continue to be monitored + treated with deworming doses per our protocol.

When a mountain gorilla named Kashayu in Busingye group started showing signs of a heavy gastrointestinal parasite load (characterized by hair loss and worsening body condition), Dr. Ricky entered Bwindi Impenetrable NP on July 31 to administer the first round of deworming medication via dart.

THEN + NOW: In February, dominant silverback Rwamutwe of Nkuringo group in Bwindi Impenetrable NP sustained a traumatic injury to his face after an interaction with silverback Tabu. On July 12, silverback Muyambi in Bwindi Impenetrable NP underwent facial surgery to repair a severe wound to his lower lip. Dr. Nelson and project veterinarian Dr. Gloria performed the surgery, and Dr. Nelson has been conducting regular follow-up visits to check on Muyambi’s healing progress.

Dr. Nelson conducted a monitoring visit for Ketusi, a blackback in Binyindo group, after he was reported with a large wound on his back. Dr. Nelson observed the wound was healing well with no signs of infection. Ketusi will continue to be closely monitored to ensure his recovery remains on track.

Dr. Gaspard spent 2+ hours observing the 25 mountain gorillas of Isimbi group in Volcanoes NP, Rwanda. 3-year-old Mwungeri exhibited some haircoat browning and will be closely monitored. Female named Wang Wang had a small wound on her eyelid, but this did not affect her activities or health.

UPDATE: Dr. Nelson checked on Muyambi, the silverback leader of Muyambi group whose lip Dr. Nelson stitched up last week. As you can see in this video (we slowed it down so you can get a good look), Muyambi’s lip is healing well and he’s actively feeding even on the side with the stitches.

Last month, adult female Mujinya of Kanywanyi group in Bwindi Impenetrable NP was observed with clinical symptoms of GI parasites. Our vet team initiated a 3-dose parasite management treatment protocol. Last week she received her second dose of deworming meds via dart and will be closely monitored.

Last week, Dr. Adrien entered Volcanoes NP, Rwanda to check on Hirwa group. Some of you may remember the tragic deaths of 4 members of this group in February 2020 when they were struck by lightning during a severe storm. At the time they had briefly crossed into Mgahinga Gorilla NP in Uganda.

After 2 hours trekking through Virunga NP, Dr. Fabrice and trackers found Nyakamwe group, a family of 17 mountain gorillas. All members of the group were in good visual health, including 40+ year old female Gato (one of the oldest females in the Mikeno sector of the park) and both of her offspring.
