For those who are not Age/SMH or trade pub subscribers this is a good précis of the current situation with the 'hack' which has affected Hachette and their distribution service, Alliance. I couldn't fit all of the second screen grab into the Alt text so I've added the last paragraph below.
It would be a bookseller’s nightmare to be on the verge of the crucial pre-Christmas shopping season − which believe it or not begins next month, with a bumper crop of books coming out − and not be able to get sufficient stock. But that’s what’s happening right now because of a problem with one of our major publishers.

A few weeks ago, something went awry at Hachette. There was what the publisher says was “unauthorised activity” on its computer systems.

The activity, which is said to have occurred on July 18, has played havoc with Hachette’s supply chains and distribution, leaving booksellers frustrated − and that’s putting it mildly.

According to a statement from the publisher, it has got in all sorts of experts who are working tirelessly to get to the bottom of what happened. And also to repair the damage to distribution. Because the “unauthorised activity” has severely disrupted its operations.

Hachette is owned by the French Lagardère Group and is the third-largest trade publisher in the world. In Australia, it also runs Alliance Distribution Services (ADS), which distributes its own titles as well as others, such those published by NewSouth Books and Magabala. Last year ADS shipped more than 16.5 million titles.

Supply is anything but smooth at present and booksellers are increasingly frustrated at the lack of information they are receiving from Hachette. Any communication they do get about the ongoing situation is apparently labelled “private and confidential”.

One who didn’t want to be named told me that while they have had some supply for mid-month releases, the cartons have come in without invoices, which makes things a bit tricky, and their daily re-orders, which replenish dwindling stock, were not being processed.Hachette has suggested, as a temporary measure, that bricks-and-mortar shops buy stock from online retailer Booktopia, which another bookseller said was “egregious” and another said would be like buying “from the enemy”. Apparently, Hachette has supplied Booktopia with extra stock of about a thousand titles.

Some shops are trying to bring in stock from overseas. One independent bookseller said they were working with Gardners in the UK, which has 500,000+ titles in its warehouses and offers about 5 million ebooks. But establishing new business accounts and sorting out trade discounts takes time, as does getting the books into Australia.

“We are taking a bit of a hit on price and margin,” the bookseller said. “Other than what we’re getting from the UK, we can’t order stock.” They said it was an “insane situation and the lack of communication has been extraordinary … it has been massively disruptive for booksellers and consumers”.

Unauthorised activity is hardly the publisher’s fault and, to be fair, the situation must be a nightmare for Hachette. Among its current titles expected to rush out of the shops in the next few months are Maggie O’Farrell’s Land − one major independent bookseller told me they had been unable to get more stock and now had no copies at all − Andrew Sean Greer’s Villa Coco, David Sedaris′ The Land and its People, and Dr Norman Swan’s The Brain Cliff (due later this month).

In its statement, Hachette said: “Some ongoing limitations to normal distribution operations mean that some forthcoming Hachette Australia titles will require changes to their publication dates and we are in touch with all the authors impacted. We understand that delays create real challenges for authors, booksellers and readers. We apologise for the difficulty and inconvenience caused as we continue to do everything possible to resolve the situation.”

Not long finished and I cannot recommend it highly enough, especially for anyone with a love of climate and nature fiction.
Passage from The Given World.

"The valley is a green crease sunk into England since forever, a place as old as anywhere, water-formed and still shaped by the river with its springs and tributaries and long-forgotten wells, its ford where horses and wagons once splashed through the shallows and now locals know to take their cars the long way round, by the road bridge, when the water's high. It is a place of wide, flat meadows, in summer sunlit and golden and now, in autumn, tangled and wet. On a hill and old stone priory watches over the little village below it, and can no longer atone for its sins."

In the end a satisfying though nonetheless challenging read with a large caveat. Parts of Drift are set in 1820's Northern Tasmania with the violence of that time and its continued trauma today prominent. That is far from enjoyable and I sincerely wish I hadn't used that word in my earlier post.

Stolen goods. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Two frames. 1. Scene at night outside a building at ground level where there’s a person visible in a room one floor up. Two black clad, hooded robbers with AI emblazoned on chest and back. Giant hole in the wall they’ve presumably made. Bricks and a tool bag to one side. One holds a large mallet standing by while another pulls a large crate marked “INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY” out through the hole in the wall.
2. The robbers are sprung in torchlight standing by the crate and the hole in the wall. One has pulled back balaclava and says, “Pay for it?! But we just happened to find it here on the street.”
