The irony of the secret calculator is that it underestimates the difficulty of implementing a "is this free text asking an arithmetic question and if so, what is it?" classifier, which would have been impossible before LLMs

My former employer's (very large tech company) holiday party in 2007 was at the rainbow room at the top of the rock. In 2008 it was in the abandoned fifth floor of a random building on 36th st.

Interestingly, in Turkey, we had Knorr brand bouillon growing up. I'm now realizing one was a Unilever and the other a Nestle product. I think it was a side effect of not having liquid broths at the store because nobody bought any food item in a container -- they just cost too much.

There's a bit of an opposite problem in parts of Europe like Spain and Italy, where the coffee shops do not open before 8am! But generally they are open pretty late. I've been to a Starbucks in Istanbul open 6am-1am

The most important and influential technology person of the 21st century. Key person in every step of the Big Data -> Cloud -> AI progression. Enough Google insiders know this to cause the price action that happened today.

Stupid question: how do you define "net buying"? Isn't there a seller on the other side of every trade?

I think the problem is that before the tournament nobody thought he'd be in this list, so they are hesitant to overcorrect their priors. I mean the guy hasn't even consistently started at Real last year.

I'd love for this narrative to be true but it really isn't. Even worse, the opposite is the reason the US does not produce world class soccer players (unless they leave their family as teenagers to go to Europe). Top Norwegian players are no different.

Güneş @goonzerk.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
Sorry but this is a bad take. If we're talking about soccer, the European way (including Norway) is way harsher for kids. They go professional at age 16 or 17, never go to college. Most don't finish a real high school.

Have you been to Spain or Italy? I live in Seville where virtually everywhere has AC in zillion year old buildings. To install a mini split, you just need to drill a hole through a wall. Next question?

It was painful (I'm Turkish). More so because the tactics of both teams were so predictable before the game and Australia's worked perfectly.

Unfortunately the Mexican food in Spain sucks because it's modified to conform to Spanish taste, which means no spices.

94 World Cup final was played in Pasadena, CA at 12:30pm local time in 100F weather. It's not like they learned their lesson. Everything is scheduled for prime time TV in Europe. Personally I think a daytime game looks horrible on TV, too, regardless of the temperature.

This brings back fond memories of when I moved from Turkey to Ann Arbor for graduate school. I vaguely knew the existence of college sports (mostly basketball), but definitely was not prepared for what was waiting for me.

I don't have first hand experience in Mexico, but if it's anywhere close to Mexican food in the US, I can assure you that is a lot more veggies (and spices) than Spanish food.

I think you're giving too much credit to the typical European by assuming they're familiar with Midwest casseroles lol. The typical American food hater believes that Americans eat McDonald's every day. The US having so many subcultures is causing people to believe that it has no culture.

I moved from the US to Spain (Andalusia) last year, and hard disagree. The lack of vegetables in Spanish (restaurant) food has been a shock.

A lot of these aren't even "second" homes in the traditional sense, but essentially the primary residence for a rich guy who actually lives in NYC but makes sure to sleep > 184 nights / year in his Connecticut home to avoid NYC taxes.

enjoy long years of retirement with (relatively) small withdrawals (and conversions) under lower tax brackets. Note you can always convert pre-tax to Roth (minus taxes) but the other direction is not possible.

Güneş @goonzerk.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
The rough rule is "Roth if you expect a higher tax rate when withdrawing in the future", and this reflects most people's life arc and thinking. However, pre-tax contribution is more popular in the high savings / early retirement community where people...

The "American accent" is mostly making sounds that do not exist in the learned language. English, and American English in particular, is very rich wrt sounds (vowels in particular). This makes it hard for most people to speak English without a heavy accent, too!

Also, Spain is currently the only major European country with a left leaning gov (except the UK, but their politics are weird) and these things can change very quickly after an election. Pedro Sánchez seems popular though.

Yes! (I'm a Turkish-American currently living in Spain). A big caveat is that the vast majority of the undocumented immigrants here are Spanish speaking people that have arrived by plane and simply overstayed. I'm not sure the public would have been as receptive if they were mostly, say, African.

I often wonder what the old world DID eat before discovering the New World. It's like bread, cabbage, fish and meat if you can find it. Mediterraneans were lucky to have olives, grapes and fruits in general, but not much else?
