I saw Digger last night, and this review/commentary from the Atlantic rather sums up my thoughts. Caution: contains heavy, heavy spoilers. www.theatlantic.com/culture/2026...

Tom Cruise’s Return to Serious Cinema Isn’t What It Looks Like
The actor sets action filmmaking aside for a new, bizarre kind of challenge in Digger.

An absolutely delightful @secondmentions.com in this Athletic article by @conor-oneill.bsky.social: a player specialising in long throw-ins is a "touchline trebuchet". www.nytimes.com/athletic/760...

The review reads like a bit of character assassination, possibly more than the book actually is. The emphasis is on Hawking being a bit of a dickhead, which is probably true, but his scientific advances seem to be dismissed or belittled. Can’t libel the dead, etc.

From the same series of Pelican Introductions, I can recommend another few books: The Caliphate (Hugh Kennedy), Economics: A User's Guide (Chang Ha-Joon), and Social Class in the 21st Century (Michael Savage).

But I’m trying to figure out a good entry-level/age to metal music like Kittie and BabyMetal: I want her to know this kind of music and aggression is thoroughly doable as a woman, but maybe their themes are a bit too adult for her just now.

As the parent of a tweenage (rugby-playing) girl, I try really hard to make sure she sees female representation in a multitude of sports, from football to BTCC, and everything in-between like Hundred cricket

The strings in particular just add so much depth and menace to a glorious piece of instrumental music. And then the entire orchestra makes way for the big guitar riffs. It’s wonderful.

Got round to that "End of Reading" article, and it is so depressing. The inability/unwillingness to read, and the consequent lack of literacy, is basically forcing the population into Newspeak without an all-powerful government forcing it onto them. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

The End of Reading Is Here
Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

The last 70 or so pages of this are absolutely brutal, both in terms of the events and the honesty required to describe and admit to them. It’s a beautiful, fascinating read overall though.
The book “Childhood, Youth, Dependency” by Tove Ditlevsen. The cover has a quote from Patti Smith: “A beautifully written, resilient and relatable chronicle for the marginalised.”

In one of the other articles about them, they had been putting £3k a month into savings, and then decided to invest all of that into shares. So almost certainly they caught the bull-market run of the 2020s. That's a skill in itself, but disingenuous to say a few quid per day on lunch got them to £1m

I think I'm right in remembering that William Hill mentioned the WC directly, but none of the other companies did. I assume they must be the official UK collaborator. (I watched a lot of sport on TV this weekend, and started to notice all of this by Sunday afternoon!)

What I've found amusing so far is the lengths the betting companies will go to to avoid saying "World Cup" in their adverts. There are constant references to "this summer's tournament" or similar. Borderline @secondmentions.com territory...

I watched JP Lost World with the kids the other night, and I'd forgotten that they do a reference/pastiche of the Muldoon/raptors scene, except it's with Compys and an idiot. The same kind of camera-angle through the bushes and a big head-turn to the side, but then it's a tiny Compy.

I was there for Eurovision the other week! Can recommend "Motto am Fluss" for sunny afternoon drinks, Restaurant Lugeck for proper Austrian food, and Plus43 for fun cocktails/nightcaps. Unfortunately I'm day-tripping to/from Budapest on Saturday; no grand European tour for me this time round.
