I don’t think AI’s have souls but I also don’t think “souls” are a real thing. If we’re talking consciousness I think we could have a better conversation and I don’t see any reason why an AI couldn’t be a conscious being. I don’t think current ones are but I’m not going to say it’s impossible.

I just vibecoded a tool for work that has a whole department spooked (my company is smallish so we’re talking like 10 people) because it could drastically reduce the amount of work they do and… whoops I guess. It wasn’t even meant for them (it was meant for me!), they were just an afterthought.

I think there was a greater fear of some kind of escalation from Russia (nuclear in particular) closer to the beginning of the war. The escalation from Ukraine has been gradual, testing the limits.
