We’re feeling helpless together, but also doing something Important. Voting matters. Let’s think of the work-party we can have cleaning this up!

It’s a long process to close up a boat for winter in the PNW. But Gretel has been up to the task. The best crew enjoys the last sail of the season. We’ll be done tomorrow 🤞 #dogs #sailing #dogsofbluesky #photography #Gretel

Good morning! We’re at that delightful time of the year when Summer’s beauty lingers as Autumn beauty begins. 🍁🍂🌹🌿

I, too, have a copy of the Food Lover’s guide to Paris. I’ve never been, but it’s fun to dream.

I have a jar of pickled herring in my fridge, I’ll have you know. Scandinavian catnip 😉

It’s a good feeling to get back to real cooking. I get lazy in the summer with grilling and making big salads.

I remember you telling us about this building, with a different photo. Fascinating. And love the ruffles!

They say that when an old person dies, it’s like a library burning to the ground. I think of the home-cooking knowledge in my family. Our memories help to pull things out of the fire and continue, but it’s hit-and-miss. I’m glad when folks make notes in the margins of their cookbooks and recipes!

Mine, too. That Dijon amps up the flavor in a delicate, but significant way.

Don’t you love looking at these old things? It’s such a clear window into the past. The frosted sandwich loaves, the aspics, the chafing dishes, the fussy apps. I’ve mentioned it before, but even the shape of turkeys has changed. They were once long and lean, but now round as bowling balls.

There’s something so homey about it. That crust with the fragrance of bacon, leeks and cheese…

That’s right! Your trip! You’re wise to get all the garden stuff done now. I’m going to use 1/4 pint jars for the jam, and try to go with no added pectin.

I harvested the grapes and tomatoes yesterday. We haven’t yet had a killing frost, but have come close. I may make grape jam this year, as I’ve run out.

Thanks, Lynn. It was a fun time, and I’ so grateful we had good weather for it. This week the temps have dropped by 15-20 degrees! Now I’m catching up on all the stuff I let slide while prepping for the party. 😉

A luscious smooth sauce for just about darn near everything. Use it for anything. I'd seriously consider it a substitute sauce for eggs benedict. #sauces #cooking #CooksofBluesky #pasta #BlueSkyCooks #TheOutpost Free to read, print and save. (Yes there are cat pics) ko-fi.com/post/Silky-S...

I joke about how well everyone behaves at this party. No over-drinking and getting out of hand, no political arguments. It’s because we all know where everyone lives, and folks remember if you were a jerk at the neighborhood party. Nobody wants to be that guy.

A party with a blend of ages and backgrounds with just one main thing in common (living in the same vicinity) makes for good conversations and a lot of grace.

Post was my first experience with social media, and we had such a great community. I’m glad we’ve recreated a friendly neighborhood here on Bluesky. I’m surprised at how meaningful it is to me. So many good people!

Thanks, Deborah. A few months ago Gretel saw a child at the park swinging a large stick, and she totally freaked out. I think she may have been hit by a child in her former life and needs to heal and get past it. We’re working on it with the Dog Trainer, and plan to set her up for success next time

That Sloop! He and his sister keep me humble, for sure. I’ve know them since early high school, and they’re like lovable, but sometimes annoying family. The next time you have a chili-dog, take a big whiff. You’ll probably smell faint traces of dog food. 🙄

Thanks, Catherine. Yes, it was a great time with lots of laughter and a sense of community. Gretel should be ready next year. I can’t believe how far she’s come in just 6 1/2 months!

Yes, and no dishwasher. But the key for me is to start early and peck away at my lists. It comes together, and this year it actually came together earlier than expected!

Thanks, ‘champ. I just thought about folks reading the flyer and thinking, “Hotdogs? We had tacos with pork belly last year!” The serving suggestions were added to get them to come back and at least try it. 😉

I’m sure you saw your own fingerprints all over this — the way I picked your brain over these last weeks. Especially on the Mac and cheese. I was waking up in the middle of the night worrying about it. Isn’t that salt block cool? It’s a serving platform (hot or cold) but it worked great as a heater

Thanks, Erin. 🧡 The Widows are indeed merry — but mostly they’re ROWDY WIDOWS. They don’t mind butting in and taking charge. They give advice when you don’t ask. They kick your ass when you need it (in their opinion). We all live in fear (and love) of them.

Fortunately I enjoy it, and love the folks in the ‘hood. They were here for me when I lost so much family over a short period, and times were rough. Good people, and a sweet community. Lots of grace.

Thanks, Jaime. I keep a file on the party, with all the past lists and planning. Also, having photos helps me recreate what doesn’t need to change, and that saves so much time. I can see the reason for the cellulose! The cheese I grated had clumped, and had to be to be crumbled into the sauce!

Thanks, BG. Yes, it does do my heart good to see new neighbors meet longtime residents, the kids meeting new friends to play with, and the sense of community. The weather was perfect, and that’s not a given in October!

I got that salt-brick as a gift, and it’s a nice little serving platform for hot or cold items. Folks serve cold shrimp or hot apps on them. Neighbors mostly use their own bathrooms (after all, they’re just a few steps away) — but anyone using the porta-potty gets a laugh.

I was thrilled with the weather. Last year I had to call an audible and have the party 2 days earlier than planned, as a cold weather front was arriving earlier than originally forecast. It was a scramble!

This ‘hood is the best. Folks don’t move away to a larger home when their family gets too big — they build an addition on their house so they can stay here. Old houses, big trees, lots of kids, and people who sit on their front porches with a glass of wine in the evening.

I love Fall. It brings a softening with the colors and angle of sunlight, but also a quickening with the crisp air. When I was younger it gave me a sense of melancholy and yearning, but now it brings reflection, a little wistfulness, and gratitude. Time and age. 🍁🍂🧡

At first glance I didn’t recognize this as a butterfly, which is very cool. It looks like art glass. The angles here, and the capture of both flamboyance and camouflage are remarkable. Plus, that cherry red!

…the landing. She could wander 5 rooms, and seemed happy enough. She couldn’t see out to the backyard, so that probably helped. But you should have seen her run around looking for dropped food and abandoned plates once she came downstairs!

Thanks! I don’t get a porta-potty for the Party, as everyone lives right in the ’hood, so mostly use their own facilities. I also have a powder-room off the kitchen. But this year we had one right across the street, so folks used it while others commented. Gretel was upstairs, with a gate across
