West Point and Annapolis are, among other things, colleges with big engineering components. They have faculty who teach calculus, mechanics, civil engineering, etc. As a stem academic, I personally know they have good people. Without tenure, that will end.

I wonder whether the islamophobes who are stepping up to protect America from Sharia Law will also help protect us from Deutsches Recht (German Law).

I didn't mean that. I appreciate that you think so. The Wikipedia description of the trial doesn't say that. Maybe you have other information?

There are blues songs about how sad it is to have to walk because you don't have a car or can't afford the train: Walking Blues Crossroads She Caught the Katie (and left me a mule to ride)

It's not that all subtle. I see posts on X saying some Democrat did or said something bad and posting a link to a news article or transcript. It just takes a paragraph to see that the article refutes the claim.

It's like the chain smoker saying he can always quit. Until he does quit, he's exposing himself to cancer & heart disease risk. The US can grow itself out of debt if the deficit is less than the GDP growth rate. It isn't.

Give the guy a break. It's wacky, but how many other Trump have heard of Shostakovich, or know he was in Leningrad during the siege, let alone the story of the 7th symphony, or even that there was a siege?

Newton would have done just fine at Cambridge. He would have aced his exams, received a full scholarship, done a brilliant PhD, quickly become a Fellow, etc. He would then be able to divide his time between science and vilifying his opponents, now as then.

I don't like Trump either, but I don't think the commentary on this clip is accurate. Trump is handed an open umbrella, which is buffeted by the wind. This happens all the time to healthy people. He holds the rail and descends carefully and slowly. I'm a healthy 71YO. I do the same when it's wet

It's a little more nuanced than that. The Packers are not publicly owned, but you might say "community owned". The owners are individual shareholders. It's a football community not a geographical one. It's nonprofit. Are there any other non-profits like this (owned by shareholders)?

Want football tickets, get an outside offer & negotiate. I had a student (decades ago) who got a job at the U. of Nebraska. His offer letter listed his salary, his teaching, the tenure clock, and his 2 (?) annual season football tickers. Go Huskers.

1. Modern finance theory holds that more return means more risk. Musk isn't smarter than a Harvard prof, but he's definitely less risk averse. 2. AI may not be the present. Turning it off won't turn off the lights. But it is the future. You will ask Siri (voice command) to turn them off.

Someone has to take the fall for this. The government used falsified evidence, which is a crime. It looks like they're setting up the Park Service. That'll teach people what it's like to be a Trump underling.

I don't think I've ever ever ever sided with Trump on anything, but I think he's right here. Just create zoning rules that require data center builders to work out the power and water issues first.

True. The difference is that some very few of McCarthy's many enemies were actual communists -- people who wanted the government to control and plan the "means of production", and maybe even Communist (supporter of the Soviet Union). None of Trump's enemies are like that.

As a working scientist, I have to say that science reporters, even at top places, were pretty bad. They typically didn't understand the stuff they wrote about & seemed incurious to find out. Their reports were mostly quotes from press releases describing how some article would change the world.

I saw a restaurant that advertised yaussion food (backwards R). Then there are words unpronounceable in the language of the alphabet they use, such as Haagendas (dots on the first a) which would be, in Swedish, something like hay-ahgendahs.

If Trump had sued the contractor the leaker worked for, that would have been a real "case". Trump does not control the contractor like he controls the IRS. That's more evidence that the suit was an excuse for a settlement (as the judge said), not about damages.

This right wing freakout has been going on for a few days now. It started when New York City put out a list of ethnic neighborhoods and left out Little Italy. 1. I don't know whether Mamdani was involved. 2. Few Italian immigrants live in Little Italy these days.

To be fair, it's not uncommon that retired politicians become university presidents. Fundraising is the most important skill for both roles. Congressman John Brademas became President of NYU. Ben Sasse became president of the University of Florida. Here's more ewa.org/educated-rep...

1. Goldman was not goaded into criticizing Mamdani. 2. He rightly identified the issue, human rights (freedom of religion) rather than existence of a state religion (e.g., Church of England). Jews have special rights in Israel. 3. Could have said the Mamdani family are refugees from Uganda.

I wish people on our side would be more careful with the truth, accuracy. Trump did not say Democrats are all communists. He said "they" (presumably Democrats) want "a lot of communists to come in". It's not the same thing.

Part of being Politically Correct is not insulting people by the ethnicity or economic status. That's why it's wrong to call Trump supporters hicks. Besides, Trump's golden White House cage-match is for rich people with bad taste who revel in violence, like him, not hicks.

It's not necessarily nefarious when housing prices go up. It just means more people want to live there, for whatever reason. The price of a painting goes up when more people like it and want to own it.

Boutros seems to be complaining about jury nullification -- juries being unwilling to enforce laws. I understand that this is part of the motivation for the jury system -- people are not punished for laws the jury thinks are unjust.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz doesn't reduce the supply of oil to the US, which produces as much oil as it uses. It doesn't make oil more expensive to produce in the US. It just raises the price --> more profit to US oil companies.

Political appointees have always had the final say. They have always used political factors. In my field (math) they program manager would create a panel of subject experts who would rank proposals. Borderline ones would be funded depending on political considerations such as geography.

Citations are to say why you think something it true. If it's in a language you don't understand, that's not the reason. Cite the source you used and say something like: See [the source in a language you know] and references there for the original research. Citing stuff you haven't read is fraud.

Having grown up in central Missouri in the 1960's, I feel America has become less racist. Still very racist, but less. As a kid, explicit segregation was legal and common. Now its illegal and less common (believe it or not). Sixty years from now things will be getter still, hopefully.

Electric utilities have been using optimal stochastic control to coordinate energy sources for decades. It's not clear that the "invisible hand" of Adam Smith is a better controller. Meeting variable demand with variable sources calls for quick decision making.
