Hunting The Quark today. This is excellent 😀. I was going to make some joke about +2/3, and -1/3 (iykyk). But fortunately I won't.

Well, that was amazing and rather wonderful. No stage, no rows of seats. A large space with various instruments on individual foot high platforms. The audience free to move around, very close to the musicians. Moving, organic, connected. I'd do that again 😀.

I'm off to London today. Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" at the Royal Festival Hall performed by the Paraorchestra. The last time I had a ticket for M418M was in 2019 - and I missed it because I was ill. Looks like I'll get there this time 😀. I've even got my old Steve Reich t-shirt on!

This is a fab new 3 disc set from Jazz In Britain. Not only do you get Danny Thompson, but you also get John Etheridge, Gary Boyle, Tony Roberts, Peter Knight, Paul Dunmall. There's some great music there

Continuing with my listen through the Soft Machine live albums that I have. Next up is Drop - with Phil Howard on drums. I know Elton Dean really liked Phil's drumming, but for me it's a bit much - sort of stream of consciousness drumming, and very intense, very powerful.

I'm off to the Nene Valley Rock Festival in Lincolnshire today. Camping there for a few days. Looking forward to seeing Focus, Colosseum, Gryphon, amongst many other great bands. Back on Monday.....😀

Another Thursday, another Festival. This time it's my local one. Three days of music, four days of camping. And meeting up with friends. I'll be back on Monday 😀.

Well, I enjoyed the eclipse. Watched it through my old 1999 eclipse glasses. A finger nail sliver of sun remained. The quality of daylight changed. My neighbours used a steel colander and projected dozens of sun-crescents onto a wall. Will do it all again in....err...2090!

I'm ready for tomorrow's near total eclipse of the sun 😀.

One minute of light drizzle. That's the first precipitation since June. I'm at another festival in ten days time. You can bet that's when the rain will come!

040

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 01/08/2026

Now listening to Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain" in the hope that it might influence the weather.

Looking through some photos I took in January 2020, I found this from a gig in Canterbury. Someone here might recognise who this is 😀.

Last night's gig in Deal was fab.

The first of my music festivals for this year kicks off today. Five days in a field - music and friendship. Back on Monday 😀.

The book I'm reading has some weird type-setting and pagination going on. Who in their right mind splits the word 'the' at the end of a line? I'll reveal which book it is later 😀.

Digging through boxes of old photos as it's too hot to go outside. Found this photo of me from the late 1970s. Dates from the time when I was called "Hairy Simon" by my friends. Actually, they still call me that - despite looking more like Brian Eno these days!

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 24/06/2026

Looks like another day in the 30°+ zone. The walking boots are put away, yesterday's mosquito bites have been treated. The blinds are down. A day to sit in the cool shade (if there is any) and read. This should keep me out of mischief for a while 😀.

A photo of the cover of "The Autobiography" by Bill Bruford.

There's a new Jonathan Coe novel due in November. Called "Lessons in Harmony" and about two of my favourite composers: Maurice Ravel, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. To say I'm looking forward to this is a huge understatement 😀.

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 26/05/2026

A new Laurie Anderson record is always welcome, and this live one from her 2023 has just been released. One of my top ten artists of the last 44 years.

Tonight's pre-gig photo (a bit late as the gig finished an hour ago!).

Just cooked the first hero of spring 😉. A couple of days later than last year.

020

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 16/04/2026

Today, when not out walking, I have been listening to these toe tappers 😀. Pat Metheny/John Zorn. Trevor Watts (a new cd from Jazz In Britain). And six sides of Soft Machine.

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 22/03/2026

Bongoing Furiously today. As you do. 😀.

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 17/03/2026

Angine de Poitrine anyone? I'm referring to the band from Quebec, not the medical condition.

I first read this novel about 25 years ago, and I am reading it again. Set in the early to mid 1970s - my own introverted teenage years - when I started to explore music. It struck a chord (an augmented seventh 😉). I have the perfect LP to go with it. And it's NOT the one you think! (Photo later).

I'm off to see The Albion Band in Canterbury this evening. Doing their Christmas thing 🌲. Pre gig photo may be arriving later!

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 19/12/2025

Listening to the first Spirogyra LP "St Radigunds" this morning. St Radigunds is the part of Canterbury where the band lived in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I often walk past the house (No 5 St Radigunds Street), a triangular shaped building at the join of two streets.

I entered the other place today (I have an account in another name). Oh how I wish I hadn't. There's a madman at the top, and it's mad all the way down 😐.

I see there's a new Frank Zappa book just out 😀.

Today's listening kicks off with an inspiration from Mr @dancingmonk.bsky.social - Tibetan Ritual Music. Recorded in 1961, released in 1967 (asfaik), and bought by me c1982. The deep sound of Tibetan trumpets, the chanting, the clash of cymbals. It's fab 😀.

@newscientist.com Hi New Scientist. You've sent me an offer to subscribe to your digital edition for £49 for a year But when I check out it's gone up to £89. Why?

Bloody Hell, a few days ago it was Tony Harrison, and now it's Brian Patten 🙁.

120

Simon Knights @goodeknyghte.bsky.social · 27/09/2025

Just read that the poet Tony Harrison has died. I remember watching him read his poem "V" late one night on Channel Four in the mid/late 1980s, and being completely mesmerized by the language and the passion.
