When doing science, math, art, or any craft, there is always a potential opportunity cost to using one tool over another. The AI use seems to have resurfaced this discussion in a chaotic way, so I tried to jot down some Q's to ask myself before using any shiny new tool.
1. Does it compromise my creative vision?
2. Does it compromise the quality of the production?
3. Does it circumvent transparency or understanding?
4. Does it bypass an opportunity to develop a skill?
5. Is it sustainable and scalable to continue using it?
6. Can I still have fun, and find meaning or beauty in it?

With XENONnT we observed solar pp neutrinos via neutrino-electron scattering. With an exposure of 2.46 t x y and electron recoil energies from 1 keV to 140 keV (probing neutrinos with energies down to 17 keV) the measured flux is (10.2±2.0)x10^10 cm^-2 s^-1. Read more at: arxiv.org/abs/2608.29450
The solar pp flux estimated from the inference results. Top: The best-fit result is shown as a solid red point. Also plotted are results from combining GALLEX/GNO and SAGE, Borexino, and PandaX-4T. The prediction from the B16-GS98 solar model is indicated by a vertical grey dashed line. Bottom: Log likelihood ratio as a function of the solar pp-flux. Dashed lines indicate different significance levels.

The DUNE far detector can detect electron neutrinos from supernova, but when they scatter with argon into excited states of potassium-40, nuclear theory uncertainties are a challenge. Solar neutrinos and muon decay-at-rest neutrinos can solve that problem! ⚛️🧪 #physics arxiv.org/abs/2606.18337

New paper out on using precise measurements of kaon decays to constrain new bosons coupling to quarks and decaying to e+e- pairs. This is relevant for explanations of the X17 nuclear anomalies, which we find are in even more tension with the kaon factory data! 🧪⚛️ arxiv.org/abs/2602.19479

Economist points out the risk to innovation re: patents, but without any cost-benefit discussion, coupled with some very tone deaf comments on fairness. An example retort to this shallow reproach would be this cost-benefit analysis by Jacobin on capital flight risk: jacobin.com/2025/12/mamd...

TIL if dealing with (huge_number - huge_number2) which can lead to machine precision noise in python computing, while mpmath can help a lot, sometimes just doing (huge_number.astype('float64') - huge_number2.astype('float64')) does the job more elegantly!

Do metrics matter? Some interesting statistics on faculty hires in hep-ph/th in the past two years, sourced from the rumor mill and inSPIRE data. For instance, there is a clear bias in offers to higher h-index ~ 15
A histogram of number of faculty shortlists and faculty offers binned by author h-index for papers with 10 authors or less, for 2024-2025 data.

Diagram of the Earth’s core, with an example dark
matter density profile superimposed. The solid-liquid boundary at 1200 km is the boundary between the inner core and
outer core, while a radius of 400 km is where the seismic data
we use loses sensitivity to the core’s structure (see text for details). Dashed arrows denote heat flow away from the center

Throwback to a fun read: "The fluid dynamics of canine olfaction: unique nasal airflow patterns as an explanation of macrosmia" Studied how the complex structure of dog nasal cavities create vortex flows of air that help odorant collection 🐶🧪 royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...
Fgure 6. The external fluid dynamics of canine olfaction. (a) At peak inspiration, an isosurface of velocity magnitude (10% of maximum inspiratory velocity) reveals the aerodynamic reach of the left nostril, which is approximately 1 cm and smaller than the internostril separation. This airflow pattern provides bilateral odour samples that may be used by the dog for odour source localization. (b) At peak expiration, an isosurface of velocity magnitude (10% of maximum expiratory velocity) shows a ventral-laterally directed air jet containing two large co-rotating vortices expelled from the canine nose, which augments odorant collection.
