Leaving the sticks and stems... Here's what it looks like on March 1, April 1, and May 1! I'll add another in June, when the plants will probably be blooming. #nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
March 1. There are some signs of green among the leaves. The sticks look pretty bad, and I'm itching to get rid of them.April 1. The new growth looks great, but I'm still wanting to get rid of those sticks.May 1. A few sticks? Who cares?! Most have fallen over, or been overgrown by new growth.

Looks like the large bullfrog I saw a month ago in my little pond is still around! Of course, I didn't label it, so I have no way of knowing if it is the same frog!

So many exciting plants today! This is Aromatic Sumac (Rhus aromatica). The straight species is tall (6-12'). There is also a popular cultivar called Gro-Low (not as desirable for wildlife as a straight species) that stays very short - about 1.5-2' for me. #nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative

Cleaning up our gardens is habitat disruption, but sometimes necessary. I just cleaned out most of the fall leaves from this small pond (3x6') Frogs will start laying eggs soon, so it's now or next fall! If I don't do, it will eventually fill up with leaves. #nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
My little frog pond. Flexible liner. Hard to see the plants at this time of year, but there is a common rush (Juncus effusus) at each end, and along the outside there are green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum).

Still water, no fish so it is a safer frog habitat.

The most common question I get asked is about mosquitos. Since there are no fish in this pond, I use mosquito dunks, which are known to be safe for amphibians, and all other aquatic critters except mosquito larvae.

I'm almost up to 300 followers! Thanks, all! I'm so glad to see Bluesky growing, and native plant enthusiasm spreading. Here are some pics of spring coming. Click pics to see the plant names. Or try to guess! #nativeplants #Virginia #goingnative
Hazelnut male catkins (Corylus americana). The female flowers are very tiny and red. They will probably be blooming by March ! Right now, the catkins are getting longer every day. They look like upside down candles waving when there is a breeze.Prairie Willow (Salix humilis). This is a male plant. These are the "pussy" buds. When they open in early spring, they are bursting with pollen, and the bees and other pollinators get covered in it!Toothwort (Cardamine diphylla). I've been enjoying watching this plant. It is dormant in summer, then around November it starts popping up fresh leaves. This continues all winter long, whenever it is warm. When the weather gets below freezing, the leaves turn dark and droop and look awful. Then when the weather gets warm, they reinflate and look fine again!
