I think there’s FAR more room than people think. Obviously you have to eat your vegetables but there’s still the ability to do cool/interesting things.

So for specifics: Trying to build B4 Baetor, Ancestor’s Voice, cards like Necropotence and the sanguine bond combo cards are what I’d consider “typical” cards for a Baetor list to lose life and take payoffs for lifegain but they… aren’t interesting cards?

Yes i get bored with “typical” brews usually. I tend to add companions or other restrictions to try and get something novel. “Typical cards” would be cards that would appear on the most played section of EDHRec generally. I want to be surprised to see a few cards in a list.

Restraint frankly. I play a decent amount of cEDH with friends. And restraining from “combo city” can be difficult because it’s so easy to add tutors here or there. Otherwise it’s avoiding “the obvious” cards for a given Commander.
