I'm happier than I should really be about a new tool that I hope I never need on a ride: chain pliers that hold two sets of quick links.

Starting a new music engraving project today. It's a small project, but kind of fun: typesetting a two-page song that'll go into a children's book. I don't know what the book is about, but the song is about bees and other pollinators.

No car needed. This is my grocery-getting setup: a Priority 600 (heavily modified with my own components) pulling a Burly Travoy bike trailer that doubles as a shopping car.

The aftermath of learning how to use the chain breaker tool and quick links. It's much easier than I expected, and now I've learned a thing. Let's hope there's not a next time, but if I ever snap a chain again, I won't have to do the walk of shame home.

Before and after. Rob from Pinnacle Bike Tech replaced my snapped chain and showed me how to repair a broken chain if it happens again. They set up a bike repair stand at Bike in Coffee in Albuquerque on the weekends.

Good news: The Rio Grande has water again thanks to monsoon rains. Bad news: My long ride turned into a long walk after snapping my chain.

A preacher hired a painter to paint his new church. The painter cut corners and used paint thinner so he wouldn’t have to use as much paint. Of course first time it rained, the paint ran. The preacher called called the painter and told him “Repaint! And thin no more.”

Not sure if I'm going to be able to dodge raindrops long enough for a bike ride today, but I can't really complain about the rain at the tail end of such a dry summer.

Tom Godfrey @godfreyguitar.bsky.social · 12/09/2026

The Rio Grande is still bone dry. We're supposed to get some rain this week, but the river in Albuquerque isn't predicted to fill up again until late October or maybe even November.

I started repurposing my online Zoom class materials for Patreon. It's turning out to be easy work. If everything goes as smoothly as it did today, I may have my Patreon up and running in a week or two. Soon after that, I could be earning tens of additional dollars each month.

I’m considering taking the online guitar courses I’ve created and reworking them for a Patreon channel. Rather than constantly scheduling a handful of classes at a time, courses would be available for Patreon members to learn from at their convenience. And I would have more time for biking!

Nice ride today. Not super long or fast or hilly. Just nice. Saw two coyotes up to no good, lots of turtles, and two roadrunners squabbling over territory. My only complaint is that the donut shop closed early today. I was 9 minutes too late!

A common question from new students is “how long should I practice?” My answer is usually “it depends,” followed by some recommendations based on their goals and where they are in their guitar journey. youtu.be/5CzPfOg6O5g

Just finished writing up all the Zoom classes I want to offer: an absolute beginner class, three chord classes, and four scale classes. Now I can slow down and create more classes as the need arises. I still have to put some things in place before I start advertising, but the heavy lifting is done.
