Still better evidence than most unregulated peptides.... My favourite longevity research is endocrinologists who noted a cocktail of HGH and testosterone increased longevity markers such as grip strength, and muscle mass in middle aged men. Almost Ignobel territory to discover this in the 2020s.

The idea that the rich will move is overstated, they were always more mobile. You tax things that are hard to move, hard to hide. The transactions moving money were never more transparent than today, it has never been easier to tax the rich.

Interesting it notes how small the change in homework time is to total learning time, but a big difference in scores. Yet Chinese policy has been to reduce the time spent on homework as students basically had too little life outside of school, maybe they should be cutting teaching time instead?!

Are there any coherent proposals on the future of aviation? Everyone seems to be planning for more flights, whereas sustainable aviation fuels are still largely a pipe dream. Electric planes mostly reveal how energy hungry it is as a mode of transport.

Logic on war seems backwards. If we take it out of the ground for profit now, it won't be there should we need it during any future war. The bigger problem seems to be right wing governments of allies endangering supplies further when there were already embargoes against Russian fossil fuels.

They are called news sites. I remember the first news web page that took over a minute to load it was so weighted down with trackers and adverts. As far as I could tell everything worked as designed. While we were aiming for 0.3s per page load or some such at the time.

More junk, I don't get the need of companies to produce physical products for virtual services. I was already talking to my phone's AI via my car's microphone & speakers, having it summarise medical research on the way home. Once someone has a convenient microphone and speaker, just roll with it.

Globally, millions are on the move - because of climate change, war, poverty etc - and the numbers are mushrooming. Pulling up the drawbridge cannot work. A solution requires rich countries to confront the causes rather than descend into populism. We must find a way to reduce global inequality.

I'm assured by a housing association they are disposing of more houses that would be expensive to bring up to new environmental standards required of landlords. In fairness they are one of the biggest builders of new social housing in the country. They wouldn't need much encouragement to build more.

One place I worked was very insistent email not be used as a task inbox, largely because email doesn't have a way for senders or managers to easily see how big the virtual pile of tasks you have is.

Not sure about that, the US federal government spent $1.7 trillion on medicaid and medicare in 2025 for 350 million people, which at today's exchange rate is more per capita than the UK NHS budget £0.2 trillion for 70 million. You get less health care per $ in the US.

Did they look at the urban/rural split? Guessing rural poor more likely to drive in spite of the cost. Here if you want to go somewhere after 18:00, or on Sunday, there is no bus & we are close to Exeter. The able can walk 30 minutes, uphill, through fields to a different bus which is more frequent.

The upside of the publicity, I'd previously missed that Reform were charging potential candidates, alongside how many senior figures in Reform bought their way into the party. Farage might be bad at declaring his sources of money, but you have to admire the way everything funnels money towards him.

The whole women's chess history is interesting. In some places it looks like it existed to discourage too much fraternisation, when that wouldn't have been acceptable. Then carried on as a separate thing except for a few women who wanted more opposition, because women's chess was never as popular.

Water costs money or needs a license to extract, so if you don't need it. Also you don't want to be shut down due to a water shortage. Refrigerants have been looked at for the closed loop, but water is cheap & easy to get hold of, so takes a lot of beating. I mean we use it in my central heating...

You know those huge cooling towers with white stuff billowing out, that's the water usage of a power station. Pembroke power station uses direct cooling, so they monitor the discharge site to see if the warm water changes the environment too much.

I believe many data centres are closed loop here. They pump heat to the roof & air cool, they only switch on "misters" (e.g. water) to remove the heat when the external temperature is too high. Most of the water used by data centres is reportedly in electricity generation.

We already prioritise veterans in a number of key areas which are otherwise underfunded, and segregation reduces what is available to non-veterans, but I think that is the contract we make with our soldiers. But hearing others complain who probably have no idea how these systems work rankles.

Simon Waters @gnufan.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I assumed it was never a good faith comment. Veteran here I know complains that in the dedicated veteran facility he's in, the other veterans nick his food from the fridge. Shared accommodation has the same issues everywhere it seems.

Simon Waters @gnufan.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Here the complaint is always about student accommodation, never seems to occur to them the number of students housed in the city will be the same after it is built, they'll just free up rooms and flats.

The moral case is strong, but many of those I know had serious mental health issues & I'm not convinced the facilities are easily provided. One once homeless got priority access to a psychiatrist, who switched their meds, result, but had it happened sooner they'd probably have not been homeless.

We need to close down UK oil & gas, & generate cheap renewables & nuclear here instead. Every US state and Chinese province can say the same thing, we are only a small part of the global problem, this is why we've made no progress in reducing CO2 emissions globally

Kind of agree, whoever rewrote it clearly didn't take existing devolution arrangements into account adequately. Seems poor rewriting too, probably best to have left it as was. Also municipal level devolution may take powers from Welsh and Scottish parliaments and push them lower still.
